Yes, teeth get stained and discolored both. Both are different conditions and needs to be managed differently by your dentist. Yes by your “DENTIST” and not by “DO IT YOURSELF” tricks or home remedies as they will harm the enamel (outermost layer of a tooth) and soft tissue which is there all around our beautiful teeth.

Basically, tooth staining involves superficial stains caused by food, example: turmeric, tea, coffee, red wine, artificial food coloring, tobacco etc. They are superficial and can be removed by your dentist or toothpaste prescribed by them can also do the job. No home remedies should be tried as they are highly abrasive methods which affect the enamel, thus increasing the chances of sensitivity and yellowishness of teeth.

Discoloration of the tooth is intrinsic stains or changes in color from inside of a tooth mostly due to age, injury, disease affecting different layers of tooth, too much of fluoride exposure in early childhood or tetracycline antibiotics taken by mother during pregnancy or by the child before 8years of age, or dentinogenesis imperfecta (a rare condition in which tooth looks grey, amber or purple). They can be treated with bleaching done superficially by a dentist or by in home kits provided by them. Sometimes a bleaching agent can be applied inside of a tooth and more severe cases are treated by caps or veneering after root canal treatment (if needed before cap or veneer and definitely needed before internal bleaching).

After the required treatment is done, visiting your dentist once or twice a year is all that you need to keep the teeth healthy and smile beautiful.
