INDIA’S PRIDE CARRIER-INS VIRAAT

INS VIRAAT is  the world’s oldest aircraft carrier. It was in the service with the Indian Navy which was demilitarize at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Monday. This event was attended by the India’s Chief of Naval Staff Sunil Lamba and the British Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord, admiral Sir Phillip Andrew Jones were present. INS VIRAAT was a centaur-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. Before INS Vikramaditiya was commissioned in 2013 , the INS Viraat was the flagship of the Indian Navy. She was the oldest aircraft carrier in service of the world. INS Viraat spend 30 years in Indian Navy and 27 years in the Royal Navy. This ceremony was attended by more than 1300 personnel who have served on board INS VIRAAT.  Viraat has played a noteworthy part in Operation Jupiter in 1989 in the Sri Lankan peace keeping operation. Her real cooperation was seen in Op Parakram in 2001-20012 when India and Pakistan were occupied with a standoff post the Parliament terror attack.

There are some things you should know about the ship INS Viraat.

  • INS VIRAAT was the longest serving warship in the world. According to Indian Navy INS Viraat hold the Guinness Book of record for this.
  • On November 1959 it was first commissioned into the British Royal Navy as HMS Hermes and decommissioned into 1984.

  • In 1987 it was sold to India and on 12th may 1987 INS Viraat was commissioned to Indian Navy and served for 30 years .
  • On July 23 2016 ship was sailed for the last time with her own power from Mumbai to kochi, where she was dey docked and prepared for decommissioning.
  • On 6th March 2017 Viraat was formally Decommissioned.
