International Day of Mathematics (Pi Day) 2022 Theme

For a mathematician or scientist, the 14th March is of special importance. On 14th March International Day of Mathematics or Pi Day is celebrated in many countries because the approximate value of Pi i.e. 3.14 matches exactly with the 14th March date (3/14). Some math geek celebrates Pi day exactly at 1.59 a.m or p.m to match the first six number of Pi, 3.1459.

Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 at San Franciscoā€™s Exploratorium by Physicist Larry shaw , later in 2009 US House of Representatives passes a resolution to recognize Pi Day. in 2019, UNESCO declared Pi Day as International Day of Mathematics.

Before the 1700s, the number we know as pi was referred to as “the quantity that gives the circumference when the diameter is multiplied by it.” But considering the length of sentence it was frustrated for people to talk about Pi. Later,British mathematician William Jones created the symbol Pi(Ļ€) in 1706 to represent the ratio.

Theme of International Day of Mathematics 2022

The theme of International Day of Mathematics 2022 is “Mathematics Unites”.

“Mathematics unites, to indicate that it is a common language and a common subject with which we can discover one another.”

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, mathematics offers its models and methods for learning, tracking and monitoring the virus transmission. It is also used in weather forecasting and in planning for natural disasters. It exposes us to climate change and helps us to predict the effects and minimize them.

Pi is irrational (not equal to the ratio of any two whole numbers), its digits do not repeat, and approximations such as 3.14 or 22/7 are often used for daily calculations. It is impossible to calculate the exact value of Pi, we can never find the exact area or Circumference of a circle. Pi is also a part of Egyptian mythology. Egyptian people assumed that Giza’s pyramids were built on the principles of pi.

There is always an argument among math enthusiasts related to Pi(Ļ€)  and Ļ„ (tau) like which is more accurate for circle calculations. Interestingly tau day is also celebrated annually on June 28 (6/28) as the date matches exactly with the value of tau(6.283185..)

14th March is also remembered as the Birth anniversary of Albert Einstein and Death anniversary of Stephen Hawking.

Also, first time on 14th March 2020 , International Day of Mathematics will be celebrated across worldwide to celebrate the role of mathematics education in science and technology andĀ  its contribution in achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Pi Day is a very memorable and celebratory day for all math lovers and mathematicians. If you want to hold a party or activity on this special day, why not prepare some interesting pins from the best enamel pin manufacturer for the participants of the event? This will not only increase the fun of your meeting but also can show how serious the organizers to it. Such cute and delicate metal pins can be also sent to your friends as special gifts.
