On Every 29th August National Sports Day is celebrated which marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand who won the gold medal in the Olympics for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936. The main aim of celebrating National Sports Day is to raise awareness about the importance of sports and daily activities in every individual life.

He stamped the international hockey arena and represented his country several times to hit his heights of glory. In Indian and world hockey, he is a legendary figure. The highest award for life’s achievement in sports and games in India is the biggest Dhyan Chand Trophy and the National Sports Day is celebrated on his birthday. Major Dhyan Chand knew his mentor Pankaj Gupta’s hockey game. Nobody has achieved his hockey stage.

About National Sports Day

The Rashtriya Khel Divas is also referred to as National Sports Day. The day was first introduced in the 2012 year’s list of celebratory days. The National Sports Day is the attraction core of the country’s passionate sports lovers. The main reason why National Sports Day is celebrated lies in the encouragement of sport and the propagation of the message of various sports.

The government of India decided to give a tribute to  such a legendry hockey player “Major Dhyan Chand” by celebrating his birthday as National Sports Day.

Major Dhyanchand, was part of the Indian Hockey Team’s and also a three-time Olympic gold medalist. He was elected as a Captain of the Indian Hockey Team at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. Throughout his career from 1926 to 1948 Major Dhyanchand had scored more than 400 international goals, scoring nearly 1,000 in his career. He was also known as Wizard of Hockey. In 1956, Major Dhyan Chand was awarded with the Padma Bhushan the third highest civilian award.

Celebration of National Sports Day

The celebration of National Sports Day emphasizes the overall importance of sports and encourages masses to realize that sports activities are needed to keep their bodies healthy and healthy. On this day we honor the legends from various sports and celebrate the current and emerging sporting icons.

National Sports Day is widely celebrated at national level and each year it is held in the Rashtrapati Bhavana. The winners are selected on the basis of who have enhanced the importance of this tricolor flag are awarded with the National Sports Awards.

Under the category of National Sports Awards, the former player and players are honored with several other awards such as Arjuna Award, and the Dhronacharya Award”. In addition to all of these honors, “Dhyanchand Award” is also given on this day.

In 2020 the Indian Government has renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award as “major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna award”

For the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the recommendation are cricketer Rohit Sharma and hockey player Rani Rampal, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and 2016 Paralympic gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu.
