CHICAGO — A powerful winter storm is sweeping toward the city, threatening to blanket Chicagoland with heavy snow, icy roads and bitter cold as the weekend begins. Forecasters warn that travel could become treacherous at times, with snowfall rates intense enough to disrupt weekend plans, deliveries and holiday travel.

Weather models indicate that the heaviest burst of snow is likely to fall from late Saturday into early Sunday, with some areas expected to receive as much as 6 to 12 inches. Strong winds are also in the mix, raising the risk of blowing snow and poor visibility on highways across northeast Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system is drawing moisture from the south while colliding with freezing air across the Midwest, creating ideal conditions for prolonged snowfall. Winter storm alerts are in effect across parts of the Chicago metro area, with warnings that drifting snow and slick surfaces could make commuting hazardous.

When Conditions Will Be Worst

Meteorologists say the most dangerous window is Saturday afternoon into the early hours of Sunday, when snow may fall at a rate of up to an inch per hour. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Sunday afternoon, though roads may remain icy well into the evening as temperatures stay below freezing.

The long-range forecast shows the city locked in a cold pattern for much of next week, with daytime highs hovering around freezing and overnight lows dropping into the teens. More flurries are possible mid-week, adding to the winter chill.

Travel, Delays and Public Safety

Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods, especially on untreated side streets and rural roads outside the city core. O’Hare and Midway passengers are advised to check flight statuses closely, as delays and cancellations remain possible.

AccuWeather reports that gusty winds may exacerbate conditions, creating whiteouts in open areas and making plowing efforts harder in the suburbs. Drivers are encouraged to carry emergency kits, keep fuel tanks full and allow extra travel time.

How to Prepare at Home

  • Shovel snow in stages to avoid strain.
  • Check heating systems and seal drafty windows.
  • Keep pets indoors or limit outdoor exposure.
  • Stock food, medications and flashlights ahead of time.

While Chicago is no stranger to winter, storms of this scale can test even the most seasoned residents. Staying informed, planning ahead and respecting road closures could make the difference between a quiet weekend inside and a night stranded on the shoulder of a frozen highway.
