A disturbing discovery inside a Hamilton East home has turned into a double murder investigation, after two people were found dead and a man later walked into a hospital with injuries ā ultimately leading to his arrest.
Police were called to a property on York Street at around 4pm on Thursday, where the two deaths were initially treated as unexplained. Within hours, the case took a dramatic turn.
Detective Inspector Stephen Ambler said an injured man presented himself at a hospital later that evening, prompting officers to make a connection between him and the deaths. The 34-year-old has since been arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Saturday.
The property quickly became an active crime scene, with cordons put in place overnight and police maintaining a strong presence into Friday. Officers sealed off areas around York Street and nearby Ford Street while forensic teams carried out a detailed scene examination.
Residents described an unusually heavy police response, with one neighbour estimating that between eight and 12 officers arrived shortly after the bodies were discovered.
For those living nearby, the incident has been both shocking and unsettling. A resident told local media they heard a loud noise coming from the property on Thursday ā something they said was highly out of character for the otherwise quiet neighbourhood.
Neighbours also revealed that an older man and woman lived at the address and were known for keeping to themselves.
Authorities have moved quickly to reassure the public, stressing that the case appears to be contained. āPolice would like to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident, and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter,ā Ambler said.
Despite that reassurance, the tragedy has left a deep impact on the community. Police extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the two victims, whose identities have not yet been released.
The investigation remains ongoing as officers continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deaths. More details are expected to emerge when the accused appears in court.
