The clock is ticking for Massachusetts residents hoping to secure one of the stateâs most sought-after license plates. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will officially close entries for its special low-number âMassachusetts 250â plate lottery at 5 p.m. today, marking the final opportunity to take part in the commemorative draw.
The lottery, which celebrates 250 years of American independence, has already attracted significant attention, with more than 44,000 applications submitted earlier this week. The plates have become a rare collectorâs item, combining historical symbolism with exclusivity on the road.
Limited plates with historic significance
Only 1,000 low-number plates are being distributed through the lottery. These include highly desirable numbers ranging from 1 to 999, along with the symbolic â1776â plate, referencing the year of American independence.
The commemorative design stands out with a blue background, red and white detailing, and the prominent display of â1776â surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original colonies. The phrase â250 Years of Independenceâ completes the design, reinforcing its historical significance.
The plate has already proven to be a major success across the state, with more than 71,000 currently in circulation, making it the most popular specialty plate in Massachusetts.
What happens after the deadline
Once the entry window closes, applicants will have to wait a few weeks for results. The RMV has confirmed that lottery outcomes will be published online on May 7, and winners will also receive notification via email.
For those selected, the plates come with a $40 biennial specialty plate fee, in addition to the standard $60 registration fee, depending on eligibility.
For many drivers, the appeal goes beyond aesthetics. Low-number plates in Massachusetts have long been considered a mark of prestige, often passed down through generations or closely associated with local heritage.
More details about the lottery process and plate program can be found through the Massachusetts RMV official website.
As the deadline approaches, the surge in last-minute entries reflects just how coveted these plates have become â blending history, identity, and exclusivity into a single number on the road.
