Reddit Images Not Loading as Thousands Report Outage

Reddit users reported problems loading images, feeds and posts on Monday, May 18, as outage reports climbed into the thousands across the app and website.

The issue appeared shortly after 1 p.m. ET, with many users saying Reddit was opening but not working normally. The most common complaint was that images were not displaying, while others reported slow feeds, broken post previews and trouble using the app.

Downdetector showed a sharp rise in reports, with complaints crossing 9,000 and later moving around the 10,000 mark. Reports suggested the website was the biggest problem area, followed closely by the Reddit app. Some users also reported issues with feeds and timelines.

Reddit confirms degraded performance

Reddit’s official status page showed the company was investigating degraded performance across parts of the platform. Later updates said the issue had been identified and a fix was being implemented through the Reddit status page.

During the disruption, Reddit said users could see errors and general loading problems across feeds, posts and search. It also noted that recently uploaded images and videos might not appear as expected.

This explains why some people could still open Reddit while others saw missing images or slow-loading posts. The outage did not affect every user in the same way, but media loading appeared to be one of the clearest signs of the problem.

Old Reddit and app users report issues

Some reports pointed to problems with Old Reddit, while others said the newer Reddit experience was loading slowly or failing to show images properly. App users also reported delays, especially when opening posts, comments or image-heavy feeds.

For many Reddit users, image loading is central to the platform. Communities focused on news, sports, entertainment, gaming, memes and local updates rely heavily on photos, videos and previews. When those fail, Reddit may technically load but still feel unusable.

Users checking the problem should first visit Reddit’s status page and compare it with outage trackers. If other apps are working normally and Reddit images fail across multiple devices or networks, the issue is likely on Reddit’s side rather than the user’s connection.

Most users do not need to reinstall the app or make major changes. Refreshing the page, switching between app and browser, or waiting for Reddit’s fix to roll out may be enough. Service may return gradually as the company restores normal performance.
