Robert K. Irving Dies at 71 After Cancer Battle, J.D. Irving Confirms

Robert K. Irving, the longtime co-CEO of J.D. Irving Ltd. and one of Atlantic Canada’s most influential business leaders, has died at the age of 71 following a battle with cancer, according to statements released Tuesday by the Irving family and the company.

Irving passed away peacefully at his home in Moncton, New Brunswick, surrounded by his wife of 39 years, Jill Irving, and their four children — Megan, Meredith, Olivia and R.J. Irving. News of his death quickly spread across Canada, especially in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, where the Irving business empire has a major economic presence.

The family described his illness as a “courageous battle with cancer.” Reports regarding Irving’s health first emerged in September 2025 after a spokesperson confirmed he had undergone cancer surgery on July 29 and was receiving treatment. The exact type of cancer was never publicly disclosed.

Major role in Canadian business and agriculture

Robert K. Irving helped lead J.D. Irving Ltd. alongside his brother Jim Irving. The privately owned company operates across multiple sectors including forestry, transportation, retail, consumer products, shipbuilding and logistics. J.D. Irving remains one of the largest employers in New Brunswick and one of the most powerful privately held businesses in Canada.

Irving was also president of Cavendish Farms, headquartered in Dieppe, New Brunswick. The company operates potato processing plants in Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Alberta and North Dakota. Cavendish Farms describes itself as North America’s fourth-largest producer of frozen potato products.

The company is also considered Prince Edward Island’s largest private-sector employer and among the island’s biggest landowners, giving Irving significant influence in Canada’s agriculture and food-processing sectors.

Moncton Wildcats owner remembered

Outside business, Irving was widely known as the owner of the Moncton Wildcats, a major junior hockey franchise competing in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. The team became an important part of the region’s sports culture under his ownership.

In its official statement, the Irving family praised Robert K. Irving’s leadership, vision and commitment to employees and communities connected to J.D. Irving Ltd., calling him “the heart and soul” of the company’s Moncton operations.

His death marks a major moment for one of Canada’s most recognized business families, whose companies have shaped the economy of Atlantic Canada for decades. Readers following major business developments can also read Swikblog’s coverage of recent market pressure on Home Depot stock.
