A last-minute travel discovery by an Australian holidaymaker is highlighting a baggage rule that many passengers only learn about when preparing for an international flight. While most travellers pay close attention to airline weight allowances, suitcase dimensions can be just as important — and overlooking them could result in unexpected airport stress.
Demi Giddings, a traveller from the Gold Coast, was finalising preparations for a European summer getaway when an online comment prompted her to double-check the baggage requirements for the airlines on her itinerary. What seemed like a routine check quickly turned into a concern after she realised her newly purchased suitcase may not comply with the size restrictions used by many international carriers.
The issue involved a large NERE Bondi check-in suitcase, which reportedly measures 180cm when its length, width and depth are combined. Many airlines operate with a checked-baggage guideline of 158cm in total linear dimensions, meaning the bag exceeded the commonly used limit by around 22cm.
For travellers unfamiliar with the rule, total linear dimensions are calculated by adding a suitcase’s height, width and depth, including wheels, handles and any fixed external components. A suitcase measuring 77cm x 52cm x 28cm, for example, totals 157cm and would generally fall within the standard limit used by many international airlines.
Demi later shared her frustration on social media, saying she had no idea there was a size restriction for checked baggage. She explained that had she known about the requirement before purchasing the suitcase, she likely would have chosen a different option ahead of her June 9 departure.

Although oversized baggage does not automatically mean a passenger will face problems, airline size restrictions exist for practical reasons.
