Netflix has confirmed the next trip to Hawkins. Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2 will premiere on September 17, 2026, bringing Eleven and the Hawkins Investigators Club back less than five months after the animated spin-off made its debut.
The new chapter continues directly from the Season 1 finale, when the group defeated the Horde Queen and prevented another gate to the Upside Down from opening. Their victory does not mean Hawkins is safe. Strange flowers, ghostly activity and unfamiliar creatures are now at the center of a fresh supernatural mystery.
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2 release date
Season 2 arrives on Netflix on September 17, 2026. Season 1 launched on April 23 with 10 episodes, making the turnaround unusually quick for a returning animated series.
Netflix renewed the show on April 28, just five days after its premiere. At the time, the company said Tales From ’85 had debuted at No. 7 in its Top 10 shows and ranked among its top 15 animated-series debuts.
The animated story is separate from the ending of the main live-action series. Anyone reconnecting with the wider Hawkins story can revisit what the Stranger Things finale revealed about Eleven before returning to this earlier point in the timeline.
What is Season 2 about?
Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max and Nikki initially return to familiar routines including arcade games, Hawkins Investigators Club missions and preparations for Valentine’s Day. That normality begins to unravel when unusual iridescent flowers start appearing around Hawkins.
Showrunner Eric Robles has revealed that Nikki and Max plan to sell the flowers around town, potentially spreading them before understanding what they are connected to. The situation grows more dangerous as mysterious ghostly apparitions and a swarm of creatures known as hate sprites begin causing trouble.
According to Netflix’s official Season 2 preview, the HIC must uncover the source of the paranormal events before another gate to the Upside Down can be ripped open.
Season 2 explores a new side of Hawkins
The characters will return to recognizable locations such as Hawkins Middle School and the Palace Arcade, but the new episodes are also expanding the town’s geography.
Robles has confirmed that the group will enter a mine in Hawkins that has not previously been explored. That underground setting gives the animated series an opportunity to add new mythology without simply revisiting places already central to the live-action seasons.
The wider franchise has repeatedly used unfamiliar parts of Hawkins to introduce new threats, which makes the mine more than a simple change of scenery. For viewers tracking characters and mysteries across the franchise, the story behind Holly and Mr. Whatsit in Stranger Things offers additional context from the live-action side of the universe.
Who is returning in the Season 2 cast?
The main voice cast remains intact. Brooklyn Davey Norstedt returns as Eleven, Luca Diaz as Mike, Benjamin Plessala as Will, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max and Odessa A’zion as Nikki Baxter.
Additional returning performers include Brett Gipson as Hopper, Janeane Garofalo as Anna Baxter, Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington, Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler, Valeria Rodriguez as Rosario and Jack Griffo as Jeff.
Where does Tales From ’85 fit in the timeline?
Tales From ’85 takes place during the winter of 1985 between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original show. Eleven had already closed the gate at Hawkins Lab, while the events surrounding Starcourt Mall were still ahead of the group.
That placement allows the creators to expand a largely unexplored period without changing what happens later. Animation also lets the franchise revisit younger versions of the characters while adding locations, creatures and adventures that were never shown during the original run.
Who is behind the animated series?
The series was developed by Eric Robles, who produces through Flying Bark Productions. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer serve as executive producers alongside Hilary Leavitt through Upside Down Pictures, with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen also involved as executive producers.
The connection to the original creative team helps keep the spin-off anchored to the established world rather than treating it as a separate animated remake.

What viewers should know before September 17
Season 1 is the most useful preparation because Season 2 continues from its finale rather than starting an unrelated adventure. The biggest confirmed mysteries now involve the iridescent flowers, ghostly apparitions, hate sprites and the unexplored Hawkins mine.
Netflix has not revealed exactly what is causing those events or how they connect to the Upside Down, so theories about the ultimate villain or outcome remain speculation. What is confirmed is that Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2 premieres September 17, 2026, on Netflix.
