A 27-year-old woman was killed after a Tesla crashed into scaffolding and other street infrastructure in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday, September 9, before continuing several blocks along East 42nd Street, police said. The driver, also 27, survived and was taken into police custody as the NYPD opened an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The collision happened at about 2:43 a.m. as a gray 2024 Tesla Model Y was traveling eastbound on East 42nd Street. According to preliminary police information, the vehicle struck scaffolding or a sidewalk shed, a bus stop and a mailbox near Madison Avenue.
The Tesla continued east after the initial collision and eventually stopped near Second Avenue. Both women were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead. Police had not released their identities in the initial updates.

Tesla continued along East 42nd Street after collision
Police accounts place part of the crash scene outside 315 Madison Avenue. After hitting street structures in that area, the badly damaged Tesla traveled several blocks toward Manhattan’s East Side before coming to a stop near Second Avenue.
The distance between the initial impact and the vehicle’s final position left investigators with multiple points along East 42nd Street to examine. Traffic-camera images from Wednesday morning showed the heavily damaged Tesla where it eventually stopped.
The crash also affected traffic in the area while police examined the scene. ABC7 reported that East 42nd Street remained closed west of Second Avenue during the morning investigation.
Passenger pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital
Emergency medical crews transported both occupants to Bellevue Hospital following the crash. The 27-year-old passenger was pronounced dead, while the driver received medical treatment and was taken into police custody.
Police-based reports from ABC News, FOX 5 New York and the New York Post described the driver as being in stable condition. Police had not publicly identified either woman while notification of relatives was pending.
Another fatal Midtown traffic case previously involved actor Wenne Alton Davis, who died after being struck by a vehicle in Midtown Manhattan in December 2025. That collision was unrelated to Wednesday’s Tesla crash.
NYPD investigators have not established a cause
The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is handling the investigation. Police said the reason the driver lost control remained unknown in the latest official information.
No police finding has linked the crash to Tesla Autopilot or Full Self-Driving technology, a mechanical problem, alcohol, speeding or another specific factor. Until investigators release further evidence, none of those possibilities can be reported as the cause.
The driver’s custody status also does not establish criminal responsibility. The New York Post reported that no charges had been filed at the time of its update, while FOX 5 reported that charges were pending.
New York City tracks fatal road incidents as part of its wider traffic-safety monitoring. The NYPD’s official traffic fatality data provides weekly citywide and borough-level figures, including statistics for Manhattan.
Crash occurred on a major Midtown corridor
East 42nd Street is a major cross-town route through Midtown, linking commercial, transit and pedestrian areas. Wednesday’s crash happened before the morning rush, but its path stretched from around Madison Avenue toward Second Avenue.
The incident follows other recent emergency responses in busy parts of Manhattan. In an unrelated case, Bank of America executive Erin Piacenti was killed in a Times Square stabbing that prompted a major NYPD response. Police have presented no connection between that attack and the Tesla crash.
For investigators, the focus remains on establishing the sequence that began near Madison Avenue and ended several blocks away. Authorities had not publicly detailed all evidence recovered from the Tesla or the roadway in the initial hours after the crash.

The passenger’s name and the driver’s identity had not been released in the latest police-based reports. Authorities were expected to notify relatives before publicly identifying those involved.
Police also had not announced a confirmed explanation for why the Tesla left its path and struck the street structures. The NYPD investigation remained active Wednesday as officers worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death and determine whether charges were warranted.
