The NFL field installed inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground has prompted a wave of jokes from Australian sports fans, with some questioning whether spectators will need binoculars to follow the Los Angeles Ramsâ historic game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Images of the completed field circulated hours before Fridayâs game, showing the narrow rectangular gridiron surrounded by large sections of the MCGâs familiar oval playing surface.
The unusual view immediately attracted attention online. Fans compared the field with the much larger area used for Australian rules football, while one joked that match tickets should include a âcomplimentary telescope.â Others described the NFL field as a âcute little pitchâ inside an AFL ground.
Several comments raised concerns about the view from ground-level seats, particularly behind the end zones and around the curved sections of the stadium.
Why does the NFL field look so small at the MCG?
Despite its appearance in wide-angle photographs, the field has not been reduced for the Melbourne game.
A regulation NFL field measures 120 yards from the back of one end zone to the other and is 53â yards wide. That is approximately 109.7 metres by 48.8 metres.
The MCG playing surface is considerably wider because it was designed primarily for cricket and Australian rules football. Placing a narrow rectangular field inside the expansive oval leaves substantial open space between the NFL sidelines and parts of the grandstand.
Austadiums reported that the venueâs oval shape means some spectators will be farther from the field than they would be at a purpose-built NFL stadium. Around 150 players, coaches, officials and other personnel are also expected to occupy the sideline areas.
The black boundary fence surrounding the game-day field creates another visual layer. From elevated camera positions, the fence and the remaining grass make the marked playing area appear even smaller.
Questions also emerged about whether synthetic turf had been placed over the MCG surface. The NFL markings, logos and end zones were applied to the existing playing surface rather than installing an entirely separate artificial field.
Historic Rams-49ers game transforms the MCG
The Rams and 49ers are meeting in Australiaâs first regular-season NFL game. Kickoff was scheduled for 10:35 a.m. AEST on Friday, September 11, corresponding with Thursday night television coverage in the United States.
The NFLâs official Melbourne game page confirmed the matchup and said gates would open at 7 a.m. The game is being streamed globally on Netflix.
The Melbourne fixture follows the unusual midweek opening to the season, which raised questions about why the NFL began its 2026 schedule on a Wednesday.
More than 200 NFL staff have been involved in preparing the venue, while approximately 59 tonnes of playing, medical, communications and operational equipment were transported to Australia.
The 49ers arrived in Melbourne approximately a week before the game to adjust to the time difference. The Rams took a different approach, remaining in the United States for most of the week before travelling closer to kickoff.
San Francisco also entered the opener with renewed attention on several returning players, including tight end George Kittle following his closely watched Achilles comeback ahead of the Rams matchup.
Organisers expected a crowd approaching 100,000, potentially making it one of the largest attendances for a regular-season NFL game. Once the match ends, crews will begin returning the MCG to its AFL configuration ahead of the remaining finals.
The field may appear miniature against the enormous oval, but its dimensions remain unmistakably NFL regulation size. For spectators accustomed to seeing AFL players spread across the MCG, however, the visual contrast was always likely to produce strong reactions.
