A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s have been found dead at a property in Bray, with Gardaí awaiting post-mortem examinations to establish how they died.
Gardaí were alerted shortly after 8am on Wednesday, October 21, following the discovery at a residence in Cois Cairn, on Old Connaught Avenue in north Bray. Both people were pronounced dead at the scene.
The property was sealed off for a forensic examination as investigators began establishing the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Their names have not been released in the reports available.
Post-mortem findings will guide the investigation
Gardaí from Dublin Metropolitan Region East are leading the inquiry. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, and an incident room has been established at Dún Laoghaire Garda Station.
In a statement carried by the Westmeath Independent, Gardaí said:
“The scene has been preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.”
The local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified, with post-mortem examinations being arranged for both deceased.
“The outcome of the post-mortems will assist Gardaí in determining the course of the investigation.”
RTÉ crime correspondent Paul Reynolds reported that the man may have died violently. That is a preliminary report; the causes of both deaths have not been publicly established.
Gardaí have not announced a murder investigation in the statements reviewed. The relationship between the man and woman, the sequence of events and whether another person was involved also remain unconfirmed.
RTÉ reported that Gardaí were appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information, to contact Shankill Garda Station.
Residents left shocked by the deaths
Wicklow TD John Brady said he had visited Cois Cairn and spoken with residents and neighbours following the discovery.
Describing the impact on the neighbourhood, he spoke of “a sense of shock and disbelief” and offered condolences to the families of both people and the wider community.
Local councillor Ian Neary also expressed sympathy and urged people to allow investigators time to establish what happened.
“Our thoughts are with the families and all the people in the area.”
Their comments were reported by The Irish Sun.
Although some early reports described the address as County Wicklow, coverage reproducing the Garda statement places the property in Bray, County Dublin. A Press Association report described it as being just over the Dublin border.
The investigation remains ongoing. Post-mortem findings and the examination of the property are expected to help Gardaí determine the circumstances of the two deaths.
