Ian Gillan Hospitalized: Deep Purple Cancels Leipzig and Hamburg Concerts

October 31, 2026 — Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan, 81, has been hospitalized following a medical emergency, forcing the legendary British rock band to cancel two concerts in Germany. The unexpected announcement affects performances in Leipzig and Hamburg, leaving fans concerned about the singer’s health and uncertain about upcoming tour dates.

The band confirmed Gillan’s hospitalization in an Instagram statement on Saturday morning. It did not disclose the nature of the emergency, his current condition or when he might return to performing.

Deep Purple Confirms Ian Gillan’s Hospitalization

Deep Purple announced that it could not perform at Leipzig’s QI Arena on Saturday, October 31, or Hamburg’s Sporthalle on Sunday, November 1.

The band expressed disappointment over the cancellations and apologized to fans for the short notice.

It confirmed that both concerts would be rescheduled and that previously purchased tickets would remain valid for the replacement performances.

Similar health-related disruptions have affected other major touring acts. Earlier this year, Linkin Park canceled its Adelaide concert because of illness, although the ticket arrangements differed.

Leipzig and Hamburg Concerts Canceled

The cancellations affect two consecutive dates on Deep Purple’s European tour:

  • October 31: QI Arena, Leipzig — canceled.
  • November 1: Sporthalle, Hamburg — canceled.

The Leipzig concert was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. local time, with British rock band Jayler listed as the opening act.

No replacement dates have been announced. Fans should retain their tickets and booking confirmations while awaiting further instructions.

Ian Gillan’s Health Condition Remains Undisclosed

Deep Purple has not revealed what caused Gillan’s medical emergency, where he is hospitalized or whether he requires extended treatment.

The singer previously discussed age-related health challenges in an interview with Uncut magazine, revealing that he had approximately 30% vision remaining.

Gillan also acknowledged that declining energy levels could eventually influence his decision to retire from touring.

However, there is no confirmed connection between those previously disclosed concerns and his latest hospitalization.

Health-related incidents involving veteran performers have drawn attention in recent months, including Céline Dion’s onstage fall during a Paris concert. Gillan’s circumstances are different because his medical emergency has required hospitalization and concert cancellations.

Will Deep Purple’s Upcoming Concerts Go Ahead?

Deep Purple’s next scheduled performance is November 3 at Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, followed by Berlin’s Uber Arena on November 4.

Additional concerts are planned for Frankfurt on November 6 and Nuremberg on November 7 before the band continues its European tour.

According to the official Deep Purple tour schedule, performances are also planned in the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom throughout November.

As of Saturday’s announcement, no additional cancellations had been confirmed. However, the band has not indicated whether Gillan will be fit to perform in Dortmund.

Ticket Refunds and Rescheduled Dates

Deep Purple has assured ticket holders that purchases for the Leipzig and Hamburg concerts will remain valid when new dates are announced.

Refund arrangements have not been detailed. Fans unable to attend replacement performances should contact their original ticket provider once updated policies are available.

Those who booked hotels or transportation separately should review their cancellation terms, as the band’s announcement does not address travel expenses.

Ian Gillan’s Career With Deep Purple

Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1969 and became one of hard rock’s most recognizable vocalists. His performances on Smoke on the Water, Highway Star and Child in Time helped establish the band’s international reputation.

The current lineup includes Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, keyboardist Don Airey and guitarist Simon McBride.

Deep Purple released its latest album, Splat!, in July 2026. Glover previously indicated that the band had no immediate plans for a formal farewell tour.

Gillan’s hospitalization has now interrupted those touring plans. With the Dortmund concert scheduled just three days after the Leipzig cancellation, fans are awaiting further information about his recovery and the band’s next performances.
