Alan Ritchson’s Wife Gave Up a Permanent Home for His Career—Now They’re Separating

Alan Ritchson and his wife, Catherine Ritchson, have announced the end of their 20-year marriage. Behind the familiar celebrity-separation headline, however, is a lesser-known part of their story: the unusual family life they created to remain together as Ritchson’s acting career accelerated.

In a joint Instagram announcement shared Saturday, September 12, the Reacher star said they had decided to “end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way.”

The couple did not disclose a specific reason for separating. Their statement instead focused on their three sons—Calem, Edan and Amory—and their commitment to becoming the “strongest co-parents we can be.” They also requested privacy while the family adjusts to the change, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The family gave up a permanent home

In 2023, Ritchson revealed that the family had sold its Florida house and begun living in Airbnbs and hotels near his filming locations.

“Being away from my family for long stretches on location was hard on them and me,” he told The Wall Street Journal.

It was a striking arrangement. Instead of Alan repeatedly leaving Catherine and their children behind, the family travelled with his work. The couple homeschooled their sons while moving between productions, hoping to preserve family time during his increasingly demanding schedule.

There is no evidence that the mobile lifestyle caused their separation, and neither Alan nor Catherine has suggested that it did. It does show how significantly the family reorganized its life around the realities of his career.

A relationship that began before Hollywood

Alan and Catherine met as teenagers in a Florida ballet class. They dated briefly, separated and later reconnected while Catherine was attending the University of Florida. They married on May 12, 2006.

Catherine remained beside him through professional uncertainty, his breakthrough as Jack Reacher and personal struggles he later discussed publicly. In a 2023 anniversary message, Alan acknowledged his bipolar disorder and the pressures his growing fame placed on their marriage. He credited Catherine’s strength, patience and forgiveness for helping the family through difficult periods, as detailed by People.

That history makes the wording of their separation statement particularly notable. They did not assign blame or erase the life they built. Instead, they said they wanted to give each other room to grow while continuing as friends and parents.

For a couple who once moved their entire household to remain together, the next chapter will involve learning how to stay a family in a different form.
