Apple is reportedly paying approximately $250 for every folding OLED panel installed in the iPhone Duo, placing a single Samsung-made component at the centre of the company’s $1,999 foldable-phone strategy.
The figure originated with Chinese social-media leaker Instant Digital, who claimed Samsung Display secured a three-year agreement to exclusively supply folding panels for the iPhone Duo and its immediate successors.
Neither Apple nor Samsung Display has disclosed the panel price or publicly confirmed the reported contract. No purchase agreement, supplier document or independent teardown currently verifies the $250 figure, meaning it should be treated as a supply-chain estimate rather than an established cost.
The wording circulating on social media can also be misleading. Apple would reportedly pay Samsung Display for each panel it purchases—not hand Samsung a $250 royalty every time an iPhone Duo is sold to a customer.
Why one iPhone Duo screen could cost $250
At $250, the folding panel alone would represent about 12.5% of the iPhone Duo’s $1,999 US starting price. That does not mean Samsung makes $250 in profit from each unit: the price must also cover materials, manufacturing, rejected panels, research costs and Samsung Display’s own margin.
The reported figure nevertheless appears unusually high beside a conventional flagship display. A July supply-chain report estimated that Samsung Display and LG Display would supply OLED panels for the iPhone 18 Pro Max for approximately $66.50 each. If both estimates are accurate, the Duo’s folding panel costs Apple nearly four times as much.
The difference reflects more than screen size. According to Apple’s official technical specifications, the iPhone Duo uses a 7.6-inch folding OLED with a 1,878-by-2,670 resolution, 430 pixels per inch, adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and outdoor brightness reaching 3,000 nits. It also has a nano-texture finish and supports the USB-C Apple Pencil.
The inner display reportedly combines flexible OLED layers with ultra-thin glass and specialised adhesives that allow the layers to shift as the phone opens and closes. Apple has said the structure uses high-strength glass above and below the OLED, with a viscoelastic adhesive intended to reduce strain during repeated folding.
Less visible is the precision work beneath the panel. The hinge reportedly contains more than 100 individual components, while a titanium plate and carbon-fibre support structure help distribute pressure across the display. During manufacturing, Apple says confocal lasers measure the surface of individual units so microscopic variations can be corrected with an added photopolymer layer.
Those steps are designed to address three persistent foldable-phone problems: a visible centre crease, damage caused by repeated bending and lower production yields. Panels that fail Apple’s appearance or durability standards cannot be installed, and that rejection rate can push up the effective price of every usable screen.
Apple’s unusual dependence on its biggest phone rival
A three-year exclusive arrangement would be unusual for Apple, which normally qualifies multiple suppliers to reduce risk and negotiate lower prices. However, Korean display-industry reporting indicates Samsung Display is currently the only manufacturer able to satisfy Apple’s requirements for foldable-screen quality, production scale and manufacturing yield simultaneously.
Samsung Display is a separate business from Samsung Electronics, the company that sells Galaxy phones. Even so, the arrangement creates an unusual commercial relationship: Apple is competing directly against Samsung’s foldables while relying on a Samsung affiliate for the component that makes the iPhone Duo possible.
Earlier reports said Chinese display maker BOE had been considered but did not qualify for the initial supply programme. LG Display also produces advanced OLED panels, although it lacks Samsung Display’s years of mass-production experience with folding smartphone screens. Samsung has been refining the technology since the first Galaxy Fold entered the market in 2019.
The reported dependence may help explain why Apple has less leverage over the Duo panel than over displays used in conventional iPhones. It could also limit how quickly Apple can reduce the price of a second-generation model unless yields improve or another supplier qualifies.
The iPhone Duo’s price, release date and specifications place it firmly above Apple’s conventional Pro models. The device also replaces Face ID with side-mounted Touch ID and uses two rear cameras rather than the three-camera system associated with Apple’s Pro flagships.
Apple has attempted to justify that premium with an almost crease-free folding screen, iPad-style Split View multitasking, an under-display inner camera and a body measuring only 5.2mm thick when open.
One claim attached to the viral story requires additional caution. Some posts say the folding display uses Samsung’s M16 OLED material set, but the original $250 leak reportedly did not provide that detail. M16 has been linked to Apple’s conventional iPhone 18 displays, but its use in the Duo panel has not been independently confirmed.
For now, the strongest conclusion is that Samsung Display supplies the technology at the heart of Apple’s first foldable. The reported $250 price is plausible in the context of folding-panel complexity, but it remains an unverified estimate—not a figure disclosed by either company.
