A devastating house fire in Aucklandâs Onehunga suburb has left one person dead after flames engulfed a two-storey property during Friday morningâs rush hour, sending thick smoke across nearby streets and forcing emergency road closures.
Emergency services were called to the blaze on Trafalgar Street around 7.20am after reports that the house was already âwell involvedâ in flames. Witnesses described seeing the entire roof consumed by fire as smoke poured into the sky opposite Royal Oak Intermediate School.
Police later confirmed one person had died at the scene. Authorities said the victim was discovered in the attic section of the home after firefighters entered the badly damaged building.
Family friend Nani Gunson, who arrived at the scene shortly after the fire broke out, told local media she immediately feared the worst after seeing flames erupting from the roof.
âOnce I saw the flames coming from the roof⌠only he lived there inside, so that was him,â she said.
Gunson said the man had been living in a converted attic space and was recovering from a recent operation. She also described him as someone who was often difficult to wake up, raising concerns he may not have escaped in time.
Hoarding Conditions Made Rescue Efforts Difficult
Fire and Emergency New Zealand officials said the property was known to emergency crews because of severe hoarding conditions inside the home.
Acting Assistant Commander Kenton Rusbridge said firefighters faced extremely dangerous circumstances due to the amount of stored material throughout the building, which created heavy fire loading in nearly every room.
The clutter also made escape routes difficult for occupants while allowing the fire to spread rapidly through the property.
Senior Station Officer Ivan Millen said firefighters encountered intense heat and flames while working inside the house.
âThis house is well known to be a hoarderâs house, so there was very heavy fire loading all through every room,â he said.
Residents living nearby described hearing continuous sirens as around 10 fire appliances rushed to the scene. One local resident said smoke was âeverywhereâ while another described the property as being fully ablaze within minutes.

Hato Hone St John confirmed four people were assessed in minor condition, while several ambulance units and rapid response teams remained on site throughout the morning.
Bus services across parts of Auckland were also diverted because of the emergency response.
