Australia’s First Gas-Free Steel Mill to Be Built in Newcastle, Production Begins in 2028

Newcastle is set to regain a major role in Australian steelmaking after Greensteel Australia selected Mayfield for the nation’s first gas-free steel mill. The $500 million project will be built on the former BHP Newcastle Steelworks site and is expected to begin production in early 2028, making it Australia’s first new steel mill in more than 30 years.
