LAS VEGAS — Marvel Studios delivered one of the biggest moments of CinemaCon 2026 with the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and it didn’t take long for the footage to send shockwaves across the industry. The highlight? Robert Downey Jr. is officially back — but this time as Doctor Doom.
The reveal marks a dramatic shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing back its most iconic star in a completely unexpected role. While the trailer hasn’t been released publicly yet, detailed descriptions from those inside the auditorium confirm that Marvel is setting up its most ambitious crossover since Avengers: Endgame.
Robert Downey Jr Returns — But Not as Iron Man
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took the stage to close Disney’s CinemaCon presentation, confirming that Doomsday will pick up after the events of Endgame and expand deeper into the multiverse saga. Moments later, Robert Downey Jr. appeared on stage to the sound of “Sympathy for the Devil,” instantly energizing the crowd.
“I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team — let alone as a new character,” Downey told attendees.
The trailer then revealed his transformation into Victor Von Doom, shown in a green hood and metallic mask. Unlike previous MCU villains, Doom is portrayed as a calculating mastermind — someone who is always several steps ahead. Director Joe Russo described him as “one of the most complex Marvel characters,” a statement that the footage strongly reinforces.
Thor vs Doctor Doom and Multiverse Chaos
The trailer opens with Professor Charles Xavier sensing a mysterious threat as a bright light appears over the ruins of his school. From there, the footage quickly escalates into a full-scale multiverse conflict.
One of the most talked-about scenes shows Thor charging at Doctor Doom with Stormbreaker, only for Doom to stop the attack effortlessly — even catching Mjolnir with one hand in another sequence. The moment establishes Doom as a villain unlike anything the Avengers have faced before.
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor delivers a chilling warning in the trailer: “We are going to need a miracle.”
Across multiple sequences, Marvel teases large-scale battles and unexpected matchups. Shang-Chi is seen fighting Gambit, Mystique transforms into Yelena Belova leading to a unique face-off, and Wakandan forces once again appear in conflict with Namor’s Talokan army.
Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four Unite
In a move fans have been waiting years for, Avengers: Doomsday fully brings together the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and newer MCU teams into a single storyline.
The trailer includes shots of the Fantastic Four finally interacting with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, following their teased arrival in earlier MCU projects. Characters like Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing appear alongside the so-called New Avengers lineup, which includes Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, and U.S. Agent.
Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, and other X-Men are also shown, signaling a full integration of mutants into the MCU. The scale of the crossover closely mirrors the buildup seen in Infinity War and Endgame, but with even more factions involved.
Earlier teasers released in late 2025 had already generated massive attention — reportedly crossing 1 billion views — but they did not reveal Downey’s role as Doctor Doom, making this trailer the first major confirmation.
Chris Evans Returns as Captain America
The biggest surprise comes toward the end of the trailer. As the battle intensifies and hope seems lost, Thor hears a familiar voice. Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers returns, catching Mjolnir in a callback to his iconic Endgame moment.
“It’s not possible,” Thor says in disbelief.
The return raises immediate questions about how Marvel will explain Steve Rogers’ reappearance after his time-travel ending. Whether it’s a multiverse variant or something else remains unclear, but the reveal drew one of the loudest reactions at CinemaCon.
Evans later joined Downey on stage, joking about the new villain: “This guy — I don’t like it.”
Why the Trailer Is Not Online Yet
Despite the intense buzz, Marvel has not released the trailer publicly. CinemaCon presentations are often exclusive to theater owners, and this footage remains under wraps for now.
This exclusivity has only fueled interest online, with fans actively searching for leaks and breakdowns. According to Variety, the trailer is the first extended look at the film following several shorter teasers earlier this year.
Marvel is expected to release the trailer officially in the coming days, though no confirmed date has been announced.
Release Date, Directors and Box Office Expectations
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the duo behind Infinity War and Endgame, with a script from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
The project is already being positioned as one of the biggest box office contenders of the year. It will also face direct competition from Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled to release on the same day — setting up a potentially historic weekend for theaters.
To strengthen its theatrical push, Disney also introduced a new premium large-format branding system called “Infinity Vision,” designed to compete with IMAX and highlight high-quality cinema screens worldwide.
With the return of the Russo Brothers, the introduction of Doctor Doom, and the largest crossover lineup in MCU history, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a defining chapter for Marvel.
For now, all eyes remain on the official trailer release — but if CinemaCon reactions are anything to go by, Marvel may once again be preparing a global box office event.
