Baltimore MTA Bus Crash: Several Injured After Car Collides With Bus

BALTIMORE — Several people were injured Thursday afternoon after a vehicle collided with a Maryland Transit Administration bus in East Baltimore, prompting a major emergency response near North Wolfe and East Oliver streets.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. in the Broadway East neighborhood, several blocks north of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Baltimore Police, Baltimore City Fire Department crews and MTA personnel responded as ambulances and emergency vehicles filled the area.

WBAL-TV aerial footage showed a vehicle with heavy front-end damage and deployed airbags, while the MTA bus came to rest off the roadway in a grassy area. Authorities confirmed multiple injuries but had not immediately released an official final casualty count. WBAL reported from the scene.

Stolen Vehicle Reported Involved in East Baltimore MTA Crash

Police said the vehicle involved in the collision had been reported stolen, adding a new element to the investigation into what happened before the crash.

Preliminary reports from the scene suggested emergency responders were dealing with a large number of patients, with some early scanner and social-media reports mentioning as many as 16 patients and at least 10 injuries. Those numbers should still be treated as preliminary until Baltimore authorities release a confirmed total.

Juveniles were also reportedly among those receiving medical treatment, although officials had not immediately provided ages, hospital destinations or detailed information about the severity of the injuries.

North Wolfe Street and East Oliver Street were closed or restricted while emergency crews treated patients, cleared the roadway and investigated the collision.

Investigation Continues Into Cause of Baltimore Bus Crash

Authorities had not yet explained the exact sequence of events leading up to the collision or identified the person driving the stolen vehicle. It also remained unclear whether anyone had been arrested or whether additional charges could follow.

Police had not publicly said whether speed, impairment or another factor contributed to the crash.

The Maryland Transit Administration operates Baltimore’s Local Bus system along with Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink and other transit services. Riders can check service information and disruptions through the Maryland Transit Administration.

The crash comes amid several recent major emergency responses in East Baltimore. Earlier this month, authorities investigated a shooting on East Fayette Street that left multiple people injured, with police shutting down part of the area while officers processed the scene.

Thursday’s collision is separate from a major MTA bus crash in Pikesville in July that injured more than 30 people after a series of collisions ended with a bus striking a building.

Officials are expected to release additional information about the number and condition of those injured, the circumstances involving the stolen vehicle and whether anyone will face charges.

This is a developing story and will be updated as authorities release additional information.
