Chile Nursing Home Fire Kills 16, 10 Residents Rescued in Pitrufquén

PITRUFQUÉN, Chile — At least 16 people have been killed after a devastating fire tore through a nursing home in southern Chile, while 10 residents were rescued as firefighters battled the blaze late Friday night.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. on September 11 at an elderly care facility in Villa Comuy, in the commune of PitrufquĂ©n in Chile’s La AraucanĂa region. Emergency crews from PitrufquĂ©n, Villa Comuy and nearby communities were called in as flames rapidly engulfed the building.

The tragedy is particularly serious because the victims were residents of an elderly care home, where some people may have needed help to evacuate. Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the fire.

Sixteen residents killed as 10 escape the burning home

Carabineros confirmed that only 10 people living at the facility were evacuated alive. Firefighters later found 16 victims during operations inside the damaged building.

The surviving residents were taken to hospital for medical assessment. Pitrufquén Mayor Jacqueline Romero said those rescued were not reported to be in serious condition in the initial aftermath of the fire.

Fire crews were joined by SAMU emergency medical teams from several hospitals as authorities prepared for the possibility of injuries and further rescues.

The loss highlights how dangerous fast-moving fires can become inside occupied buildings. A separate recent incident involving a deadly school fire in Bukavu that killed 24 students also showed how quickly evacuation can become critical when large numbers of people are inside a burning facility.

Emergency response expands across Villa Comuy

Villa Comuy is located about 32 kilometres west of Pitrufquén. Fire companies from the local area and neighboring communes responded to the emergency as the blaze destroyed the elderly care facility.

Firefighters, police officers and municipal personnel remained at the scene into the early morning, clearing debris and securing the area. A nearby high school was also designated as a temporary shelter for people affected by the fire.

Images from the scene showed emergency vehicles gathered around the facility while heavy smoke and flames spread through the structure.

The scale of the response is similar to other major fire emergencies where evacuations became the immediate priority. In another recent case, a four-alarm apartment fire in Manhattan forced residents to evacuate as crews worked to control a rapidly developing blaze.

Investigators examining how the fire started

The cause of the PitrufquĂ©n nursing home fire remains unknown. Chile’s Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered specialist police teams to investigate the origin and circumstances of the blaze.

Personnel from Labocar, the Carabineros forensic laboratory, and the OS9 specialist unit were assigned to the investigation. Authorities are expected to examine where the fire started, how it spread and whether any additional factors contributed to the high death toll.

Meganoticias reported, citing Carabineros and local officials, that 16 people were confirmed dead, 10 residents were evacuated and specialist investigators were working to establish the cause of the fire.

Authorities have not publicly blamed an electrical problem, deliberate act or any other specific cause. Until forensic work is completed, claims about how the fire started remain unconfirmed.

Earlier nursing home tragedy adds painful context

Chile has experienced a deadly nursing home fire before. In 2018, 10 elderly women died when a blaze destroyed a dormitory at the Santa Marta nursing home in Chiguayante, south of Santiago.

The earlier disaster is not linked to the Villa Comuy fire, but it underlines the severe consequences fires can have in residential facilities housing older people.

The latest tragedy also comes shortly after a separate fire at Hotel Alto Nevados in the mountains of Pinto, where around 150 people were evacuated. No connection has been established between the two incidents.

Pitrufquén community waits for answers

Mayor Romero said communal mourning would be declared following the deaths. Authorities had not released a complete public list of victims in the initial reports.

For families and the wider community, the key unanswered questions now concern how the fire began, how quickly it spread and whether investigators identify safety issues that contributed to the scale of the tragedy.

The confirmed toll remains 16 dead and 10 residents rescued as investigators continue examining the scene and Chilean authorities prepare further updates.
