Dave Bautista Cast as Kratos in God of War Series After Ryan Hurst Injury
Dave Bautista is officially set to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst after an on-set injury disrupted production. The casting gives Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television a new lead for one of Prime Video’s biggest upcoming video game adaptations.
Bautista, known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and his WWE career, had been in talks earlier in August before his casting was confirmed on August 20. Variety’s report on the casting confirmed that Bautista will take over the role after Hurst’s injury forced the studios to change course.
Why Ryan Hurst was replaced as Kratos
Hurst was announced as Kratos in January 2026 and filming began in Vancouver in February. He tore a bicep while performing a stunt in late June and required surgery.
His recovery could have delayed production into 2027, so the studios chose to recast the lead role. Hurst already had history with the franchise after voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarök.
Production is being reset around Bautista
The change is more than a simple actor replacement. Industry reports indicate footage from the original shoot is not expected to be used, effectively requiring the series to restart around Bautista.
Preparation is underway for a reported mid-October return to filming in Vancouver. Prime Video’s two-season order remains in place, with both seasons still planned to shoot back-to-back.
Frederick E.O. Toye remains attached to direct the opening two episodes, while Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Why Dave Bautista could work as Kratos
Bautista brings an obvious physical background from professional wrestling, but the modern version of Kratos demands more than size. His performances in Blade Runner 2049 and Dune have shown a quieter dramatic side that could suit the older Spartan warrior.
The Norse-era Kratos is defined by grief, restraint and fatherhood as much as combat. That makes Bautista’s chemistry with Atreus particularly important to how the adaptation works on screen.
The series follows Kratos and Atreus
The live-action story draws from the modern God of War games. Kratos and his 10-year-old son Atreus travel to scatter the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother, while confronting gods and dangers from Norse mythology.
That family storyline remains important across the wider franchise. God of War Laufey puts Faye at the center of the next chapter, giving fans additional context around a character central to Kratos and Atreus’ journey.

Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus. The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif and Sonya Walger as Freya.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Prime Video has already found major success adapting another gaming franchise for television. Fallout Season 2 continues Amazon’s push into video game adaptations, making God of War another important test of how well established game worlds can translate into long-form streaming series.

Replacing the lead several months into filming is disruptive, but restarting gives the production one consistent version of Kratos rather than trying to combine material built around two different actors.
Prime Video has not announced a premiere date. For now, the focus is the planned production restart and whether Bautista can bring both the physical presence and emotional restraint that define the modern Kratos.
