PARIS — Delphine Benouaich made a violent first impression in the UFC on Saturday, dropping and badly bloodying Sofia Montenegro before choking her unconscious with a rear-naked choke at UFC Paris. The referee stopped the strawweight fight at 4:22 of Round 2 after Montenegro lost consciousness without tapping.

The finish gave the 31-year-old French fighter a successful Octagon debut in front of a home crowd at Accor Arena. Benouaich improved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the UFC, while Montenegro fell to 6-3 and 0-1 in the promotion.

Benouaich vs Montenegro turns into a firefight
Benouaich did not spend her debut trying to ease into the contest. She pressed forward from the opening exchanges, trading combinations with Montenegro and repeatedly forcing the action at close range.
Montenegro had success of her own and landed several clean shots. Benouaich was even left bleeding from the nose during the second round, but the Frenchwoman continued marching forward rather than slowing the pace.
She mixed punches with knees to the body and kept Montenegro under pressure as both fighters traded in the pocket.
The right hand that changed the fight
The decisive moment came in Round 2 when Benouaich landed a right hand that dropped Montenegro.
Benouaich immediately followed her to the canvas, moved into mount and began attacking with punches and elbows. Montenegro was left heavily bloodied as she tried to defend from underneath.
When Montenegro turned while attempting to escape the ground-and-pound, Benouaich took her back and quickly attacked the neck.
The rear-naked choke was soon locked in.
Why Montenegro never tapped
Montenegro did not submit by tapping. She remained caught in the choke until she lost consciousness, forcing the referee to intervene at 4:22 of the second round.
That is why the result is officially described as a technical submission rather than a standard tap-out submission.

Benouaich arrived in Paris after competing on Season 34 of The Ultimate Fighter as part of Team Daniel Cormier.
She defeated Mackenzie Stiller by unanimous decision in the quarterfinals before losing a decision to Valesca Machado in the semifinals. Although she did not reach the TUF final, Benouaich still earned an opportunity to make her official UFC debut.
She entered Saturday’s fight with a 7-2 record. The victory over Montenegro moved her to 8-2 and marked her eighth win across her past nine professional bouts.
It comes during a busy year across the UFC, including Justin Gaethje’s lightweight title victory over Ilia Topuria, another major result that altered the promotion’s competitive picture.
Montenegro was competitive before the finish
The bloody ending does not tell the entire story of Montenegro’s performance.
She entered UFC Paris at 6-2 and landed meaningful offense before the knockdown. Montenegro had also previously competed on Dana White’s Contender Series, where she lost a split decision to Jeisla Chaves.
Saturday marked her official UFC debut, and the defeat moved her professional record to 6-3.
