Dutton Ranch episode 8, titled Whiskey Limits, delivers one of the biggest turning points of the season. The penultimate episode finally reveals Beulah Jackson’s fate after her dramatic collapse, brings her decades-old romance with Everett McKinney back to life, pushes Carter to leave Beth and Rip, and uncovers a criminal operation that could change the future of 10-Petal Ranch.

Streaming now on Paramount+, the episode answers several lingering questions from episode 7 while setting up an explosive season finale on July 3.

Beulah survives after a heart attack

Episode 8 begins exactly where the previous episode ended. After collapsing during the 190th anniversary celebration at 10-Petal Ranch, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) is airlifted by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital.

The episode confirms she is alive and recovering after suffering a heart attack. Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) refuses to leave her side, while Oreana also remains with her throughout the emergency.

Watching Beulah nearly die changes Everett completely. He admits he no longer wants to lose another chance at love simply because of his own stubbornness. Beulah jokingly replies that if she’d known a heart attack would change his mind, she would have had one sooner.

The emotional conversation officially reunites the pair after years apart. Before long, Everett even helps Beulah sneak out of the hospital so they can return to his home together, marking one of the season’s happiest moments.

Rob-Will’s inheritance creates new problems

Although Beulah survives, the conflict over 10-Petal Ranch continues to grow. Earlier she named her troubled son Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) as her successor instead of Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba), leaving Joaquin furious and deeply disappointed.

Beth Dutton also makes her feelings clear. She tells Beulah she agreed to work for her—not Rob-Will—calling him a liability. Beulah asks Beth to continue taking things one day at a time, but the inheritance decision clearly changes the working relationship between both ranches.

Carter reaches his breaking point

Carter’s storyline becomes one of the episode’s emotional highlights. Still dealing with the consequences of his drunken behavior at Beulah’s party, he admits to Beth that he dropped out of school because he wants to become a cowboy like Rip Wheeler and the late John Dutton.

Rip gives Carter his first real day working cattle at 10-Petal Ranch alongside Azul. Hungover and inexperienced, Carter struggles throughout the day. After falling off his horse while trying to wrangle cattle, he lashes out at Azul before Rip steps in.

Frustrated and embarrassed, Carter rides away and later tells Rip, “You’ll never be my father.” He accuses both Beth and Rip of acting like heroes simply because they adopted an orphan.

As Carter prepares to leave, Beth shares one of her most emotional speeches of the series. She apologizes for not always being there for him and tells him their ranch will always be his home. Carter still drives away, but the farewell suggests their relationship is far from over.

Austin exposes the biggest secret of the season

The episode’s biggest revelation comes when ranch-hand Austin decides he can no longer stay silent. After Wes and Chet disappear, he confides in Zachariah before meeting Beth and Rip.

Austin claims that 10-Petal Ranch has secretly operated an illegal cattle-smuggling network from Mexico for years. According to him, cattle are stolen across the border before fake paperwork is created for border officials and cattle brokers.

He tells Beth and Rip the Jackson family has been financing its wealthy lifestyle through fraud instead of honest ranching. Austin also believes Wes uncovered the operation after getting close to Rob-Will, ultimately leading to his death.

The revelation completely changes the stakes heading into the finale. Beth and Rip are no longer dealing only with difficult neighbors—they may now be standing in the middle of a criminal enterprise that threatens ranchers across South Texas.

What Episode 8 means for the finale

Episode 8 answers the season’s biggest question about Beulah’s survival while opening several new ones. Will Carter return home? Can Beth expose the Jackson family’s illegal business? What role will Rob-Will play now that he is Beulah’s chosen heir? And how will Joaquin respond after being pushed aside?

Viewers won’t have to wait long for answers. Episode 9, titled El Padrino, premieres on July 3 as the Season 1 finale.
