Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza ‘Unjustifiable’ as Protesters Chant ‘Clown

PHILADELPHIA — Ed Sheeran addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Macklemore’s removal from his Loop Tour after protesters outside his Philadelphia concert chanted, “Ed Sheeran is a clown.”

Speaking before beginning his concert at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran told the crowd that what was happening in Gaza was “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” He described the loss of civilian and children’s lives as heartbreaking and said the injustice unfolding in the West Bank could not be ignored.

The remarks were Sheeran’s clearest public response since Macklemore’s departure and the withdrawal of several supporting performers.

“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions,” Sheeran said, before acknowledging that he had made mistakes and telling the audience he was “so, so sorry.”

Sheeran also condemned the October 7 attack in Israel and the killings at the Nova music festival. He framed the crisis as a humanitarian issue while saying he had tried to keep his concerts centred on “unity, joy, escapism, love” rather than politics.

Why Macklemore was removed from the Loop Tour

Macklemore had been scheduled to support Sheeran at most remaining US stadium dates. The dispute began after the rapper said “Free Palestine” while performing at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey earlier in September.

Messina Touring Group said owners of upcoming venues would not allow shows to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup. The rapper was then removed from the remaining support dates.

Sheeran has denied personally ordering Macklemore’s removal. In an earlier statement, he said he tried to build a bridge between the rapper, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the venues, but that the final decision was taken by the promoter.

Macklemore alleged that Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium, helped organise pressure from stadium owners. Kraft said Gillette Stadium would not provide a platform for what he considered hate speech and argued that Macklemore’s previous rhetoric and imagery had hurt members of the Jewish community. Macklemore has denied being antisemitic and said criticism of Israel should not be equated with hatred of Jewish people.

The fallout widened when Beoga, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe withdrew from Sheeran’s dates, while Finneas left planned South American appearances. Philadelphia was left without its announced support lineup, although Sheeran performs much of his show alone.

Protesters chant “Ed Sheeran is a clown”

Around 50 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered near Broad and Pattison streets before the concert, according to CBS News Philadelphia. Video shared by Variety captured protesters chanting “Ed Sheeran is a clown” outside Lincoln Financial Field. Police monitored the peaceful gathering.

Reaction online was divided. Some users criticised the chant and urged demonstrators to focus on direct aid, while others said the protest reflected frustration with Sheeran’s initial response. Fans at the stadium were also split over whether he should bear responsibility for a decision involving promoters and venue operators.

Sheeran said he was speaking with people holding different views to determine how he could help victims. He also questioned the idea of venues approving performance content in advance, widening the dispute into a debate about expression on concert stages.

Macklemore has pledged $1 million to Palestinian relief organisations and challenged Kraft to match the donation. A spokesperson for Kraft later said Kraft and Sheeran had each agreed to contribute $2 million, although the intended recipients had not been publicly identified at the time of reporting.

The dispute has renewed questions about music, politics and venue control. A similar debate over whether entertainment can remain separate from war has shaped the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation in Eurovision 2026.

Sheeran’s remarks did not end the dispute, but they marked a shift from his preference to keep political debate outside his concerts and put his position on Gaza’s humanitarian toll on the record.
