First Look: Sydney Metro West Stations Revealed as 20-Minute Commute Moves Closer

Sydney has been given its first detailed look at the future of its Metro West rail line, with the New South Wales government unveiling initial designs for a series of new stations that promise to reshape how the city moves. The images, released on Thursday, showcase planned stops at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays and Hunter Street, as the state pushes towards a 2032 opening.

The project, which aims to connect western Sydney with the CBD in under 20 minutes, is being positioned as a transformative shift in daily commuting patterns. Officials say that by 2036, as many as 20,000 passengers per hour are expected to travel east towards Sydney’s CBD during peak periods, while another 10,000 will head west towards Parramatta.

The designs mark a visible step forward for a project that has largely remained underground — literally — with major tunnelling works now complete. Construction is set to shift towards station building and track installation later this year, with final station designs expected in early 2027.

Stations designed around local identity

Rather than adopting a uniform look, the government has emphasised that each station will reflect the “character” of its surrounding neighbourhood. At Westmead, materials and colours are inspired by local geology and plant life, while North Strathfield incorporates brickwork and arches drawn from nearby streetscapes.

At The Bays, one of the most closely watched precincts, the station has been designed to frame views of the heritage-listed White Bay Power Station, linking the transport hub to a broader redevelopment area that is expected to include thousands of new homes and public spaces.

Burwood North will feature a 60-metre underground pedestrian walkway beneath Parramatta Road, aimed at improving connectivity in one of the city’s busiest corridors. Meanwhile, Five Dock station is being shaped alongside local council plans for the surrounding Fred Kelly Place precinct.

The government has allocated around $600 million for the station developments, which sit within a broader infrastructure push tied to housing growth — including plans for up to 8,500 homes at The Bays.

A broader shift in how Sydney moves and grows

Premier Chris Minns has described the project as “transformational”, particularly for Western Sydney, where faster connections to the CBD have long been promised but rarely delivered at this scale. For many residents, the prospect of reaching central Sydney in under half an hour represents a significant shift in access to jobs and services.

Transport Minister John Graham has also highlighted the strategic importance of the line, noting that it links emerging hubs such as Pyrmont, Sydney Olympic Park and The Bays — areas expected to play a larger role in the city’s economic future.

Beyond commuting, the project reflects a broader planning strategy in which transport infrastructure is closely tied to housing and urban development. By improving access between key districts, Metro West is expected to influence where people live, work and invest over the coming decade.

While ministers say no immediate cost blowouts are being forecast, they acknowledge that global pressures, including geopolitical tensions, could still impact large construction projects. For now, the focus remains on delivering the line on schedule, with contracts for additional western stations — including Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park — expected to be awarded later this year.
