October 27, 2026 â HBO has announced three new actors for its upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone television series, confirming who will portray Harry Potter’s parents and Ron Weasley’s older brother ahead of its Christmas Day premiere.
Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, Hannah Chinn will portray Lily Potter, and Harry Gilby has been cast as Charlie Weasley. The announcement brings a largely unseen character from the original films into the new adaptation while expanding Harry’s family backstory.
The eight-episode first season premieres December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max in supported markets.
Harry Potter HBO Series Confirms Three New Cast Members
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the three actors will appear in the first season of the adaptation.
- Jasper Talbot: James Potter, Harry’s father.
- Hannah Chinn: Lily Potter, Harry’s mother.
- Harry Gilby: Charlie Weasley, Ron’s older brother.
Gilby previously appeared in Tolkien and The Last Kingdom. HBO has not disclosed how many episodes will feature the newly announced characters.
Charlie Weasley Finally Gets His Screen Debut
Charlie’s casting is significant because the character never received a substantial on-screen appearance in the original eight-film franchise.
In J.K. Rowling’s books, Charlie works with dragons in Romania. During Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, he helps arrange a new home for Norbert, the dragon secretly raised by Hagrid.
The television format could restore more of that storyline, although HBO has not confirmed whether Charlie’s role will follow the novel exactly.
Charlie is the second-oldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley, portrayed in the new series by Rafe Spall and Katherine Parkinson.
James and Lily Potter’s Roles Explained
James and Lily Potter are central to Harry’s history. Their deaths during Lord Voldemort’s attack leave Harry orphaned and explain his upbringing with the Dursley family.
James was close friends with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Lily’s sacrifice to protect Harry establishes the magical protection that shapes his survival.
Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville portrayed the characters in the original films. HBO has not confirmed whether the new adaptation will expand their backstory through additional flashbacks.

Harry Potter Release Date, Episodes and Streaming
The first season follows Harry’s discovery of Hogwarts, his friendships with Ron and Hermione, and the mystery surrounding the Philosopher’s Stone.
The December 25 premiere places the adaptation among the year’s major television launches, alongside other productions featured in the 2026 television premiere schedule.
Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, David Heyman, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts are also executive producers.
Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers Music are developing the show’s score.
Why HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Matters
Unlike the original films, the television adaptation is designed to devote an entire season to each novel, allowing more time for Hogwarts life and supporting characters.
The series also arrives amid changes to Warner Bros.’ entertainment business following the reported Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, which has prompted questions about the future of major franchises and streaming services.
For viewers, the latest casting announcement raises two questions: how prominently Harry’s parents will feature and whether Charlie Weasley’s dragon storyline will receive the screen treatment largely missing from the films.
Those details remain unconfirmed ahead of the Christmas premiere.
