A calm Saturday morning in Temecula took a surreal turn when a hot-air balloon carrying around a dozen people made an unexpected emergency landing in a residential backyard, leaving homeowners and neighbors stunned.
The incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. near Temecula Parkway, where Hunter and Jenna Perrin were going about their usual routine — watching TV and doing yoga — when their home security system sent an alert about movement in the backyard. Seconds later, there was a knock at the door.
“I opened the door, and he goes, ‘They just landed in your backyard,’” Hunter Perrin recalled in local reports. “I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And he goes, ‘The balloon.’”
Backyard Surprise Turns Into Neighborhood Spectacle
Rushing outside, the couple found a full-sized hot-air balloon descending into their yard, its basket carrying roughly a dozen passengers. The balloon came down remarkably close to their home, fence, and nearby trees — but managed to avoid any damage.
“I was amazed that they missed our tree. They missed our house. They were practically kissing the fence,” Jenna Perrin said.
The unusual landing quickly drew attention across the neighborhood. Residents stepped out of their homes, many meeting each other for the first time, as they watched the balloon settle into place.
Despite the shock factor, those on board remained calm. Passengers were safely guided out of the basket, and the situation was handled without panic. Homeowners described the group as friendly and composed, even as the unexpected scene unfolded around them.

Hot-air balloons are not uncommon in the Temecula area, especially during early morning hours when weather conditions are typically stable. However, the Perrins said they were unaware that their home was directly along a flight path.
“We’ve seen them in the distance before,” they said, “but never imagined one would land here.”
The unexpected encounter has left a lasting impression. While the homeowners joked that they won’t be booking a balloon ride anytime soon, they admitted the experience was memorable.
“Although if they did land in our backyard again, it would be nice,” Hunter said with a laugh. “We wouldn’t have to drive home.”
