Also known as World Cabin Crew Appreciation Day, the event began in Canada in 2015 when a flight attendants’ union launched an initiative to highlight the dedication and professionalism of cabin crews. From Airships to Modern Aviation

The history of flight attendants stretches back more than a century. In Europe, Nelly Diener became the continent’s first female flight attendant when she joined Swissair in 1934. Over the following decades, cabin crew positions expanded across global airlines, though discriminatory hiring policies remained common until legal reforms transformed the industry.

How the Profession Evolved

The Civil Rights Act and landmark lawsuits during the 1960s and early 1970s helped end many discriminatory hiring practices. Marriage bans were removed in 1965, while a 1971 Supreme Court ruling paved the way for men to return to the profession. Around the same period, the term “stewardess” gradually gave way to the gender-neutral title “flight attendant.”

During the 1980s, aviation regulators and airlines increasingly emphasized safety responsibilities following several major aviation incidents. Today, flight attendants are trained in evacuation procedures, firefighting, first aid, CPR, medical emergencies, and passenger management. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), cabin crew play a critical role in maintaining onboard safety and emergency preparedness.

Despite the glamour often associated with travel, the profession remains demanding. Flight attendants routinely work overnight schedules, manage jet lag, spend long periods away from family, and handle disruptive passenger behavior. The industry also faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many crew members experienced furloughs, uncertainty, and major operational changes.

Recent years have brought new pressures as airlines report increased passenger traffic alongside a rise in onboard misconduct. Cabin crews are frequently required to resolve conflicts while maintaining a calm environment for travelers.

They are trained aviation professionals whose skills, resilience, and quick decision-making help ensure safe journeys every day.
