Update: Airport Lockdown Lifted
Update – 12:30 p.m. CT: The lockdown at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) has been lifted, and the airport is now fully open and operating as normal, city officials confirmed.
According to a statement from the Kansas City Aviation Department, authorities became aware of a potential threat in an unsecured area of the terminal earlier Wednesday morning. Airport Police and the FBI responded quickly, evacuating travelers from the affected area while the situation was evaluated.
Officials said law enforcement determined there was no credible threat to the airport or those inside the terminal. Once that determination was made, airport staff worked to resume normal operations and minimize disruption for travelers.
Passengers were allowed to return through security screening, and flights continued after the temporary shutdown.
Kansas City International Airport (MCI) was briefly shut down on Wednesday morning after airport officials responded to a reported security threat, prompting a lockdown and evacuations inside the terminal.
Airport police confirmed they were investigating the situation and working with federal authorities to assess the credibility of the issue. Travelers inside the airport were moved out in stages, while others reported being held in place during the response.
In a statement shared by city officials, the Kansas City Aviation Department said it was aware of the situation at the airport and that Airport Police were working with the FBI to “substantiate any potential threat,” as the investigation continued.
By late morning, security operations began to restart, with travelers allowed to re-enter screening lines. Images and short videos circulating online showed passengers waiting outside while law enforcement activity continued inside the terminal.
Officials have not publicly confirmed what triggered the lockdown, and there were no immediate reports of injuries. The airport’s response appeared to be precautionary as investigators worked to verify the information that led to the disruption.
