Kip Lewis injury vs Michigan

Kip Lewis Was Full-Go in Warmups — Minutes Later Oklahoma Star Was Hurt

Oklahoma linebacker Kip Lewis went from looking fully ready for Saturday’s showdown with Michigan to leaving the field in visible pain, delivering an early and potentially significant blow to the Sooners’ defense.

The contrast was particularly striking because there appeared to be little concern surrounding Lewis immediately before kickoff at Michigan Stadium.

Oklahoma reporter Josh Callaway wrote during warmups that Lewis was in “full Gameday Kip mode,” adding that the linebacker had been “running and jumping around the field” in the minutes before kickoff.

Not long afterward, the situation changed dramatically.

Lewis went down during the opening stages against Michigan in what observers on social media described as an apparent non-contact injury. He was able to get off the field, but reporters at the stadium immediately noted his discomfort.

“Kip Lewis is hurt and he is pissed off.”

Parker Thune of Rivals added that Lewis spiked his helmet while hobbling toward the sideline, calling it “not good news” for Oklahoma so early in the game.

George Stoia III of SoonerScoop similarly reported that Lewis was “in a lot of pain” as he hopped off the field. Stoia noted that James Nesta entered the game following Lewis’ exit.

What is the latest on Kip Lewis?

As of the initial reports, Oklahoma had not announced a diagnosis or the severity of Lewis’ injury. The circumstances of the play have generated concern, but there is not yet enough information to determine exactly what Lewis injured or how much time he could miss.

That distinction is important until Oklahoma or coach Brent Venables provides an official update.

Lewis is far from an ordinary loss for the Sooners. The fifth-year linebacker is one of Oklahoma’s nine season-long captains and entered 2026 with 31 career starts and 212 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss. He was also named a preseason All-American by multiple outlets, according to Oklahoma Athletics.

Last season, Lewis led Oklahoma with 76 tackles, while adding 10.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, making his status particularly important in one of the Sooners’ biggest early-season tests.

This story will be updated when Oklahoma provides further information on Lewis’ condition.
