Kylie Kelce Apologizes for ā€˜Princess Kate’ Remark, Renews Podcast Invite

Kylie Kelce’s invitation to the Princess of Wales began with something familiar: a hockey stick, a sporting connection and the possibility of a conversation about raising children. A week later, the podcast host returned to the subject with an apology over how she had addressed the royal.

On the October 1 episode of Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce, Kelce said she had learned more about Catherine’s name and title after calling her ā€œPrincess Kate, Duchess of Cambridgeā€ during an earlier shout-out. She corrected herself, but kept her invitation open.

ā€œI love learning, so I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine ā€˜Princess Kate’ was offensive,ā€ Kelce said during her ā€œRage Bait of the Weekā€ segment. ā€œI didn’t know that. Now I know that. Now I will proceed accordingly.ā€

She added: ā€œI apologize for the mistake. I would like to refer to people in the most respectful way and how they feel respected.ā€

How a hockey moment led to the invitation

The invitation followed William and Catherine’s September 17 visit to the Isle of Bute in Scotland, where the princess tried shinty, a traditional Scottish stick-and-ball sport. For Kelce, a former college field hockey player, the footage offered an immediate connection.

On her September 24 episode, she acknowledged that Catherine was playing shinty rather than field hockey, but credited the princess’s hockey background for her skills.

ā€œPrincess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, if you ever wanted to come on and chitchat about some field hockey and maybe kids,ā€ Kelce said. ā€œI don’t know. We got a couple things in common.ā€

That shared interest has real history behind it. Catherine played hockey at Marlborough College and for the University of St Andrews team, according to her official royal biography.

Kelce competed for Cabrini under her maiden name, Kylie McDevitt. Her college athletics record shows she started all 20 games in her senior 2016 season and scored three goals against No. 9 Trinity in the NCAA tournament.

There was a family connection, too. Prince William appeared on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast on July 3, 2026. The Kelce brothers had previously met William and his children backstage at Taylor Swift’s London Eras Tour concert in June 2024.

Swift’s career has continued to bring the Kelce family into entertainment coverage, including attention surrounding her Artist Director honor and ā€œPatient Zeroā€ premiere at the VMAs.

The title correction—and Catherine’s own podcast history

Catherine became Duchess of Cambridge when she married William in April 2011. She became Princess of Wales after King Charles announced William’s new title on September 9, 2022. Her formal style is Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales.

Although ā€œKate Middletonā€ and ā€œPrincess Kateā€ remain widely used in media coverage, they are not her formal royal style. The word ā€œoffensiveā€ was Kelce’s characterization; the reports reviewed do not establish that Catherine personally complained or requested an apology.

Catherine is already familiar with podcast interviews. In February 2020, she joined Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum, Happy Baby to discuss early childhood. In September 2023, she appeared with William and Princess Anne on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby.

Kelce made clear she still hoped for a conversation. ā€œShe is an incredible woman,ā€ she said. ā€œShe has children. She played field hockey. She battled cancer. There are so many things that I would love to speak to her about.ā€

As of the October 1 coverage, there was no confirmed acceptance or public response from Catherine to the invitation.
