Drivers using the M4 near Newport faced major disruption after a seven-vehicle collision led to lane restrictions, recovery work and slow-moving traffic on a busy section of the motorway.
The crash was reported on the eastbound carriageway between junction 23A for Magor Services and junction 23 for the M48. The incident caused queues to build during the afternoon as recovery teams worked to clear the scene and make the road safe for traffic.
Traffic monitoring updates said one lane was closed while recovery work was carried out. Motorists heading eastbound experienced delays of around 30 minutes, with congestion forming near the affected stretch and spreading towards nearby junctions.
The impact was not limited to the eastbound carriageway. Traffic on the opposite side of the motorway also slowed, with westbound drivers facing delays caused by onlookers passing the crash scene.
