The long-awaited return of Malcolm in the Middle is finally taking shape, but one familiar face will be missing. Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original series, has chosen not to return for the revival—even after reportedly being offered a substantial financial incentive.
According to comments from co-star Jane Kaczmarek, Sullivan has stepped away from acting entirely and is now focused on academics. She revealed that he is currently studying literature, describing him as an “incredible student” deeply engaged in his work. Despite strong efforts from the production team to bring him back, including what she described as “buckets of money,” he declined the offer.
This makes Sullivan the only original cast member not returning for the new four-episode revival, titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.” The role of Dewey will now be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, marking a notable shift for fans who grew up with the character.
The revival storyline pulls Malcolm back into the chaos of his family life as his parents, Hal and Lois, call him home for their 40th anniversary celebration. Frankie Muniz reprises his role as Malcolm, alongside Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek returning as the iconic parents.
