A large-scale search is under way off the coast of Brisbane after a man in his 70s went overboard from a cruise ship, an incident that has drawn urgent attention due to the scale of the rescue effort and the narrow window for survival in open waters.
The man fell from the Carnival Splendor about 30km northeast of Moreton Island on Friday night while the ship was sailing towards Sydney. He was travelling with family members, who alerted crew after he was reported missing, prompting an immediate onboard investigation.
A review of CCTV footage later confirmed the man had climbed over the ship’s safety railing before going into the water, according to a Carnival spokesperson. Authorities were quickly notified as the vessel continued its journey.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is coordinating the search and rescue operation, deploying Challenger jets from Melbourne and Cairns, five rescue helicopters from Brisbane and six vessels with support from Queensland Police.
Search intensifies as time and conditions work against rescuers
The search area lies in open ocean northeast of Moreton Island, where strong currents and night-time conditions significantly complicate efforts. In overboard cases, even a short delay between the incident and detection can expand the search zone dramatically.
Authorities have not released further updates on the man’s condition, with the operation focused on scanning a wide area of water using both aerial and maritime resources. The scale of the response reflects the urgency typically associated with such incidents, where survival chances decrease rapidly over time.
Carnival said its care team is supporting the passenger’s family and that it will assist authorities in their investigation once the ship returns to Sydney. The company reiterated that all appropriate protocols were followed after the man was reported missing.
Second tragedy adds to concern around Moreton Island waters
The incident comes on the same day a separate tragedy unfolded near Moreton Island, where a 67-year-old Tasmanian woman was found unresponsive in the water near the wrecks at about 11.46am. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed investigations into the woman’s death are ongoing, and that the two incidents are not believed to be related. However, the timing has intensified scrutiny on safety in the region, particularly as it remains a popular destination for tourists and cruise passengers.
While overboard incidents are rare, they often prompt questions around passenger safety measures, surveillance systems and emergency response protocols on large cruise vessels. For now, the focus remains on the ongoing search as rescue teams continue efforts in a vast and challenging stretch of ocean.
