Mundelein Murder-Suicide: Five Victims Identified, Including Veterinarian Couple, Son and Grandson

MUNDELEIN, Illinois, October 20, 2026 — Five people found shot dead inside a suburban Chicago home have been identified as a retired veterinarian couple, their son, grandson and the son’s longtime partner. Authorities are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide that has shaken the normally quiet village of Mundelein.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as James Schmidt, 80; Rebecca Schmidt, 77; Bryan Schmidt, 51; Maclaine Schmidt, 22; and Nicole Heiser, 37. Four were members of the same family, spanning three generations.

Autopsy findings indicate Bryan Schmidt died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not announced a motive or explained what led to the deadly violence.

Five Mundelein Murder-Suicide Victims Identified

James and Rebecca Schmidt were retired veterinarians who lived at the Wellington Avenue home. Their son Bryan had recently lived in Antioch, Illinois, with his longtime partner, Nicole Heiser.

Maclaine Schmidt, Bryan’s 22-year-old son, lived in Lake Bluff.

The elderly couple had longstanding ties to the local veterinary community through Northern Illinois Cat Clinic in Libertyville. Bryan was also involved in the family business, which reportedly closed earlier in 2026.

Neighbors described James and Rebecca as friendly, quiet residents. Rebecca was remembered for greeting people and speaking with neighbors during walks.

Autopsy Findings Reveal New Details About Five Deaths

The Lake County Coroner’s Office conducted autopsies Monday, October 19.

James and Rebecca Schmidt died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Maclaine Schmidt and Nicole Heiser each died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Bryan Schmidt also suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, which the coroner described as apparently self-inflicted.

Two handguns were recovered from the property. Authorities have not released detailed ballistic findings or established the precise sequence of the shootings.

California Daughter Requested Welfare Check

Police discovered the bodies late Sunday, October 18, after a relative reported being unable to contact a family member.

Local television reports identified the concerned relative as Kimberly, the elderly couple’s daughter, who lives in California.

At approximately 11:45 p.m., Mundelein officers responded to the residence in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue.

They entered through an unlocked door and found three men and two women dead in different rooms.

Investigators have not confirmed exactly when the shootings occurred.

Neighbors Recall Possible Gunshots Before Bears Game

Some residents reported hearing loud popping sounds earlier Sunday but initially believed they were firecrackers.

One neighbor recalled the noises before the Chicago Bears game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Police have not established whether those sounds were connected to the deaths.

The incident has unsettled Mundelein residents, many of whom described their community as peaceful and unfamiliar with violence on this scale.

Two Guns Recovered as Police Examine Nearby Vehicle

Investigators recovered two firearms inside the home and examined a gray Volkswagen Jetta parked near Kristan Funeral Home, a neighboring property.

Local reports indicated the vehicle was registered to Maclaine Schmidt. Authorities have not publicly explained its significance to the investigation.

The Mundelein Police Department is working with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the county coroner.

Police said the incident appeared isolated and there was no continuing danger to the public.

Family Tragedy Raises Questions as Investigation Continues

Authorities are examining the victims’ final hours, the recovered weapons and any circumstances that may explain the shootings.

Investigators have not established a motive, confirmed the exact time of death or publicly identified any previous warning signs.

Police reported no known history of emergency calls to the Wellington Avenue home.

The deaths follow other recent family violence investigations, including a five-person fatal shooting in Douglas, Georgia. Police have not suggested any connection between the cases.

Another Houston family murder-suicide investigation involving a custody dispute highlights the importance of establishing circumstances rather than assuming a motive. No similar dispute has been established in Mundelein.

Anyone with relevant information can contact the Mundelein Police Department.

For the Schmidt family’s relatives, former colleagues and neighbors, the investigation continues as authorities work to determine what happened inside the Wellington Avenue home.
