SYDNEY — A 27-year-old woman has been Tasered and arrested after a 48-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the hand outside Dendy Newtown cinema, triggering a major police operation on busy King Street in Sydney’s Inner West.
Emergency services were called to the popular Newtown entertainment precinct at about 11.40am on Monday, October 5, following reports of an assault. NSW Ambulance reportedly received the initial call shortly after 11.30am.
Police arrived to find the injured man with a serious wound to his hand. Paramedics treated him at the scene before taking him to hospital in a stable condition. A report citing NSW Ambulance said he was transported to the Sydney Hospital Hand Unit and was the only patient requiring ambulance treatment.
Police locate woman allegedly carrying knife
NSW Police said the 48-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed in the hand by a woman who was unknown to him.
Officers searched the surrounding area and located a 27-year-old woman nearby who police allege was still armed with a knife.
Police directed her to drop the weapon, but officers said she allegedly failed to comply. A Taser was then deployed before the woman was arrested and taken into custody.
She was transported to Newtown Police Station as investigators began examining what happened before the alleged attack.
A detailed account of the incident, citing NSW Police, was also published by NewsWire via news.com.au.
Witnesses describe chaotic scenes on King Street
The incident unfolded in broad daylight in one of Newtown’s busiest areas, surrounded by shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and heavy pedestrian traffic.
Local bookstore manager Rachel Goldrich said a group of women ran into her store seeking shelter and warned that there was a woman outside with a knife.
Goldrich said she could hear the woman yelling in the street and later saw her moving between traffic as motorists attempted to avoid her.
She also recalled hearing the woman arguing with someone further down the road earlier, although she said she did not initially believe anything serious was happening.
According to Goldrich, several police vehicles then arrived with sirens sounding. Officers got out and repeatedly told the woman to put the knife down before Tasers were used.

Social media video shows arrest aftermath
Video posted to social media appeared to show a woman restrained on the roadway while screaming as officers surrounded her.
Onlookers carrying shopping bags could be seen watching nearby before police moved the woman away from the road toward a shopfront, where officers continued speaking with her.
The footage captured only part of the police response and does not establish the full sequence of events before officers arrived.
King Street closed during police operation
Police established a crime scene around the area, forcing the closure of King Street between Wilson Street and Church Street.
The shutdown disrupted traffic and public transport through central Newtown, with services rerouted while police conducted their investigation.
King Street is a major route through Sydney’s Inner West and carries substantial vehicle, bus and pedestrian traffic toward the CBD, meaning the incident had an impact well beyond the immediate crime scene.
Later updates confirmed that King Street had reopened in both directions after being closed for several hours. Transport diversions were lifted and traffic conditions returned to normal.
No public motive established
Police had not publicly identified a motive or explained what led to the alleged confrontation in the information available following the arrest.
Although police described the woman as unknown to the injured man, that does not establish whether the alleged attack was random. Investigators are expected to examine witness statements, CCTV and other available evidence before determining the circumstances.
The incident adds to a series of serious knife investigations across New South Wales. Swikblog recently covered the Valley Heights stabbing investigation in the Blue Mountains, while an earlier Merrylands stabbing near a Sydney train station resulted in one death and multiple critical injuries. The cases are unrelated.
Victim stable as inquiries continue
The 48-year-old victim remained in stable condition following treatment for the hand injury. There were no reports of any other person requiring hospital treatment from the Newtown incident.
The 27-year-old woman was taken to Newtown Police Station. At the time of the latest reports, police inquiries remained ongoing and no charges had been publicly announced.
Further information about possible charges, the events leading to the alleged stabbing and the relationship — if any — between those involved is expected to depend on the continuing police investigation.
