Proxima Dea Wins Crown Oaks as Trainer Eyes Melbourne Cup
Proxima Dea delivered another impressive performance in the Group 1 Crown Oaks, maintaining her perfect career record with a sixth victory from six starts.
The David Payne-trained filly arrived at Flemington unbeaten following victories in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. Her previous success against male rivals had established her as the horse to beat in the Oaks.
With Zac Lloyd aboard, Proxima Dea completed the 2,500-metre contest ahead of runner-up Shameful Impulse and third-placed De Armas, who had entered the race following her victory in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes.
The result confirmed Proxima Dea’s standing among Australia’s most promising young staying horses and prompted Payne to discuss an even bigger target.
“I want to win the Melbourne cup, so maybe I’ll have to hang in there,” Payne told Nine after the race.
The trainer said Proxima Dea would now be given time to develop before her next campaign.
“She’s won six out of six. She’ll have a good spell now, let her mature. She’s still a baby, but she’s got the heart,” he said.
Payne also credited the owners and his stable team for their contribution to the filly’s success.
Winning jockey Zac Lloyd shared the trainer’s enthusiasm about her future, suggesting she possessed the stamina required to pursue a Melbourne Cup campaign.
“She’s special, a very special filly,” Lloyd told Nine.
The Crown Oaks was Proxima Dea’s second Group 1 victory, adding to her Spring Champion Stakes triumph on October 24.

Attention then turned to the final race of the afternoon, where Rey Magnerio provided another memorable finish.
Rey Magnerio won the $200,000 Listed G.H. Mumm Century Stakes in a thrilling photo finish, storming home in the final stages of the 1,000-metre sprint at Flemington.
Ridden by William Pike and trained by Robbie Griffiths, the seven-year-old gelding secured victory by a narrow margin in Race 9, bringing the Oaks Day programme to a dramatic conclusion.
The Century Stakes attracted an experienced field of sprinters aged three and older, with Rey Magnerio among the prominent contenders heading into the meeting.
In other notable results, Lady Catalina claimed the $300,000 Group 3 Crown Red Roses Stakes for trainer Ciaron Maher and jockey Blake Shinn, narrowly defeating Sequinned and Semantics over 1,100 metres.
Sulek won the $500,000 Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final ahead of Wetumpka and Rosa Aotearoa, while Bella Verona produced a convincing victory over favourite Sass Appeal in the $350,000 Inglis Bracelet.
Harry’s Yacht also secured Listed success in the Chester Manifold Stakes, defeating Pinstriped and Revelare over 1,600 metres.
Oaks Day formed the third major meeting of the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival, following Victoria Derby Day and Melbourne Cup Day. The four-day racing festival concludes with Champions Day at Flemington on Saturday, November 7.
