Oxford United’s scheduled midday clash with Sheffield United was cancelled just hours before kick-off on Sunday after the playing surface at Bramall Lane was deemed unfit, leaving supporters and staff scrambling for clarity.

Match officials carried out a late inspection and ruled that frozen areas of the pitch posed a safety risk, forcing the game to be called off close to the scheduled start time. The decision followed a period of overnight freezing temperatures across parts of northern England.

According to a report by Yahoo News , the cancellation was confirmed only hours before kick-off, with fans already en route or inside the stadium when the announcement was made.

Bramall Lane, home to Sheffield United, has previously hosted fixtures during winter conditions, but officials concluded that sections of the surface had frozen unevenly, increasing the risk of player injury. Under league regulations, referee assessments take precedence when pitch safety cannot be guaranteed.

The late timing of the decision caused frustration among travelling Oxford United supporters, many of whom had already made the journey north. Clubs are expected to provide guidance on ticket arrangements and rescheduling in the coming days.

The fixture will be rearranged for a later date, with both clubs now facing a congested calendar as winter postponements continue to disrupt domestic schedules.
