Residents in a Rotorua suburb were urged to stay indoors after a fire at a car wrecking yard sent thick smoke across the Ngongotahā area on Saturday. Authorities warned people to close windows and doors and avoid the area around Wikaraka St as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews quickly worked to bring the situation under control.

“Crews and fire trucks from multiple brigades are at the scene,” the spokesperson said.

“They have contained the fire and are now dealing with remaining pockets of burning material and hotspots.”

Even after the flames were contained, firefighters continued to manage smouldering debris to prevent flare-ups.

Residents told to stay indoors and shut windows

Because of the thick smoke spreading across the suburb, authorities issued a warning to nearby residents.
