A man from La Tuque has died after his sport utility vehicle collided head-on with a tanker truck on Route 155 in Grandes-Piles, Quebec, early Thursday morning.
The collision occurred at about 7 a.m. on September 10, 2026, on the major Mauricie highway connecting Shawinigan and La Tuque.
According to preliminary information provided by the Sûreté du Québec, the SUV was travelling south when it crossed into the opposite lane for a reason that remains unknown.
The vehicle then collided with an oncoming tanker truck, police spokesperson Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau told Le Nouvelliste.
Tanker truck overturned after Route 155 collision
The force of the collision sent the tanker truck onto its side in a roadside ditch. The truck driver was not reported injured, while the driver of the SUV died following the crash.
Authorities had not publicly released the victim’s name or age as of the latest update. Police confirmed only that he was a resident of La Tuque.
No hazardous-material spill was reported from the overturned tanker, reducing concerns about a wider environmental or public-safety emergency near the collision scene.
A collision-reconstruction specialist with the Sûreté du Québec was assigned to examine the vehicles, roadway and physical evidence.
Police have not determined why the SUV left its lane. Investigators had not publicly identified speed, distraction, impairment, fatigue, road conditions or a medical emergency as contributing factors.

Route 155 was reported closed between Routes 153 and 159 while emergency crews secured the scene and investigators conducted their examination. Traffic was redirected through local roads.
