Dramatic video shows a Russian Mi-8 helicopter descending onto a busy highway before sliding into a roadside ditch on Sakhalin Island. Officials said the passengers and crew escaped with bruises and scratches.
The helicopter made the hard landing in the Dolinsky district of Russia’s Sakhalin region on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Vehicles travelling along the road were seen moving away as the low-flying aircraft approached from behind.
Footage circulating on social media shows the Mi-8 travelling just above the highway before reaching the road surface. The helicopter then moves toward the shoulder and enters a ditch, where its spinning rotor strikes nearby trees and sends branches and debris into the air.
No deaths were reported aboard the helicopter or among people travelling on the highway.
Who was aboard the Mi-8 helicopter?
The helicopter was carrying eight people, according to information released by the Sakhalin regional election commission and reported by Interfax.
Those aboard included three crew members, an election commission representative and four journalists working for local television channels.
The aircraft was returning from Cape Patience in the Poronaysky district, where early voting was being conducted for residents of remote areas ahead of Russia’s State Duma elections.
During the return journey, the helicopter reportedly began losing altitude while approaching Sokol airfield. The pilot managed to bring the aircraft down on the roadway before it rolled into the ditch.
Officials credited the pilot’s actions with preventing a more serious outcome. Passengers and crew sustained bruises and scratches, while no casualties or structural damage were reported on the highway.
Emergency personnel and technical specialists were sent to the scene following the landing.
Was fuel exhaustion responsible for the landing?
The precise cause has not been officially confirmed. The regional election commission said technical specialists were investigating why the aircraft suddenly lost altitude.
Some reports and Russian military aviation commentators claimed the helicopter may have exhausted its fuel, resulting in both engines shutting down. That explanation remains an allegation and should not be treated as the official finding while the investigation continues.
The Mi-8 reportedly belonged to Aviation Detachment No. 11, based in Khabarovsk. The aircraft had been supplied by Russia’s Ministry of Defence to support voting operations in difficult-to-reach communities.
The video attracted widespread attention because the helicopter descended directly toward moving traffic. Drivers appeared to recognise the danger and clear its path moments before the aircraft reached the roadway.
Despite the force of the landing and the rotor striking vegetation beside the highway, the fuselage appeared to remain largely intact in footage recorded at the scene.
