A fast-moving brush fire in Santee, California, sparked panic Sunday evening after flames broke out near a busy commercial hub, forcing the evacuation of major retail stores including Walmart and Michaels. The fire, which ignited near Town Center Parkway, quickly drew a massive emergency response as thick smoke filled the sky and authorities rushed to secure the area.
According to officials, the fire was first reported shortly after 6:30 p.m. near the 100 block of River Rock Court, close to the San Diego River. Within minutes, the blaze intensified, sending up a large plume of smoke visible across surrounding neighborhoods.
Shoppers Evacuated as Fire Breaks Out Near Retail Hub
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies were immediately dispatched to assist with evacuations in the nearby shopping center along Town Center Parkway. Customers and employees inside Walmart and Michaels were safely escorted out as a precaution while firefighters worked to contain the flames.
Authorities emphasized that the evacuation was limited to commercial areas. No residential evacuations were ordered, and officials confirmed that homes were not under immediate threat.
“A fire is burning in the riverbed near the 100 block of Town Center Parkway. Please avoid the area until further notice,” the department said in a public alert issued around 7:15 p.m.
Fire Grows to 3–4 Acres, Smoke Visible Across Santee
By early evening, officials reported that the fire had spread to approximately 3 to 4 acres in a riverbed area. While relatively small compared to large-scale California wildfires, its location near businesses made it a high-priority incident.
The blaze produced a heavy column of smoke that quickly drew attention from residents, many of whom took to social media after noticing the sudden emergency activity.
Authorities later indicated that the fire was expected to move toward the Cuyamaca bridge, where natural terrain could help limit further spread.
Firefighters Deploy Helicopter and Ground Crews
Emergency response teams from multiple agencies, including the Santee Fire Department and San Diego Fire-Rescue, were dispatched to the scene. Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from reaching nearby structures.
Among the key resources deployed was Copter 3, a specialized firefighting helicopter equipped for night operations. The aircraft was sent in to support ground crews as daylight faded, highlighting the seriousness of the response effort.
In addition to aerial support, multiple fire engines were positioned around the area to manage hotspots and prevent flare-ups.

At this stage, there have been no reported injuries and no confirmed damage to residential properties.
Cause Still Unknown as Investigation Begins
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators are expected to examine whether environmental conditions, human activity, or other factors contributed to the ignition.
The incident has been referred to in some reports as the “Town Center Fire”, and it was officially recorded as a wildfire starting at approximately 6:32 p.m. on private land in San Diego County.
Details regarding containment levels have not yet been released, but early indications suggest that firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading beyond the immediate riverbed area.
Public Advised to Avoid Area
Authorities continue to urge the public to stay away from Town Center Parkway and surrounding areas until further notice. The presence of emergency vehicles, helicopters, and ongoing firefighting operations makes the area unsafe for non-essential travel.
