About South Africa PowerBall

PowerBall is operated by the National Lottery of South Africa. Players select 5 numbers from 1 to 50 and 1 PowerBall number from 1 to 20. PowerBall PLUS offers an additional chance to win using the same selected numbers but features a separate draw and jackpot.

Draws are held every Tuesday and Friday evening. If no player matches all required numbers, the jackpot rolls over to the next scheduled draw.

Participants must be 18 years or older. Play responsibly.

How are the PowerBall prizes calculated?

  • PowerBall prizes are shared among all winners in each division — except for Divisions 8 and 9 which have fixed prize values.
  • A percentage of total ticket sales forms the prize pool (50% for PowerBall & 50% for PowerBall PLUS).
  • Fixed prizes (Divisions 8 and 9) are calculated first, based on the number of winners. The remaining prize pool is then shared across Divisions 1 – 7 on a pari-mutuel basis (split among all winners in each division).
  • Each of the 9 prize divisions gets a share of the prize pool. Divisions 1 – 7 each receive a percentage share of the prize pool, while Divisions 8 and 9 are fixed prize amounts as detailed below:
  • PowerBall: R15 for Division 8 and R10 for Division 9
  • PowerBall PLUS: R7.50 for Division 8 and R5 for Division 9
  • Unwon jackpots roll over to the next draw.

Estimated vs Guaranteed Jackpots – What’s the difference?

  • Estimated Jackpot – This is the expected jackpot amount, based on projected ticket sales for a draw. The overall prize pool is made up of 50% of PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS ticket sales, with each prize division, including the jackpot, allocated a share. Estimated jackpots are usually very accurate (around 95%+).
  • Guaranteed Jackpot – This is a special promotional feature where a minimum jackpot amount is guaranteed, regardless of sales. It is usually set above the estimated jackpot for that draw.
  • If actual ticket sales generate a jackpot larger than the Guaranteed amount, the higher jackpot will always be paid. In short: the Guaranteed Jackpot is the safety net, but players always get the bigger prize.
