updated: August 8, 2026
A Premium Bonds saver in Southampton landed a £100,000 tax-free prize in the August 2026 NS&I draw, helping the city record at least £685,000 in published prizes worth £1,000 or more. The monthly total was significantly higher than July’s £459,000, highlighting another strong month for local bondholders.
The published figures only include prizes of £1,000 and above. Thousands of smaller awards worth £500, £100, £50 and £25 are not listed by location, meaning many more Southampton residents may also have won in August.

Understanding the £100,000 winning Bond
The £5,000 figure shown by NS&I refers only to the original purchase block containing the winning Bond number. It does not mean the saver owned only £5,000 in Premium Bonds.
According to NS&I, the Southampton winner held £45,000 in Premium Bonds overall. Since every eligible £1 Bond receives its own entry into the monthly draw, each individual Bond had an equal chance of being selected.
The successful Bond block was purchased in September 2024, meaning it had been eligible for multiple monthly draws before producing the six-figure prize.
How Southampton’s published prizes were distributed
- 1 prize worth £100,000
- 3 prizes worth £50,000
- 6 prizes worth £25,000
- 7 prizes worth £10,000
- 15 prizes worth £5,000
- 140 prizes worth £1,000
These published awards total 172 prizes worth £1,000 or more. They do not include smaller winning amounts, so the true number of Southampton winners is considerably higher.
Southampton did not win the £1 million jackpot
Neither of August 2026’s two £1 million Premium Bonds jackpots went to Southampton.
The first jackpot winner was based in Kent and held £21,000 in Premium Bonds, with the winning Bond purchased in February 2026. The second millionaire came from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, holding £49,850, with the winning Bond bought in March 2022.
Although Southampton is located in Hampshire, NS&I records it separately for prize reporting, so the Hampshire and Isle of Wight millionaire is not connected with Southampton’s £100,000 winner.
How to check if you’ve won
NS&I encourages every Premium Bonds holder to check their results using the official Premium Bonds Prize Checker.
You can search using:
- Your Premium Bonds holder’s number
- Your NS&I account number
- The official NS&I Prize Checker app
The service shows the latest draw, the previous six monthly draws and any older unclaimed prizes. NS&I currently reports that there are more than 2.8 million unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes worth over £125 million waiting to be claimed.
How winners receive their money
Successful bondholders can choose to:
- Receive winnings directly into a nominated bank account.
- Have prizes paid into an NS&I Direct Saver account.
- Automatically reinvest winnings into more Premium Bonds, provided total holdings remain below the £50,000 maximum investment limit.
NS&I recommends keeping your bank details, address, email and phone number up to date to avoid payment delays or missed notifications.

Latest Premium Bonds odds and prize fund
The August 2026 draw was held using NS&I’s current prize structure, with:
- Prize fund rate: 3.8%
- Winning odds: 22,000 to 1 for every eligible £1 Bond
- Total prizes awarded: More than 6.22 million
- Total prize value: Approximately £433.7 million
Each £1 Bond has exactly the same chance of winning regardless of when it was purchased. The prize fund rate determines the total amount paid out across all prizes and does not guarantee an individual return.
Premium Bonds prizes remain completely free from UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, while all money invested with NS&I is backed by HM Treasury.
When newly purchased Premium Bonds become eligible
New Premium Bonds must be held for one complete calendar month before they enter a prize draw. For example, Bonds purchased during August 2026 will normally first qualify for the October 2026 draw.
Savers can invest from £25 up to the maximum holding of £50,000, and adults may also purchase Premium Bonds on behalf of children under 16 through a nominated parent or guardian.
