According to Vietnamese state media, the Ministry of Science and Technology has granted licenses covering satellite internet services, radio frequencies, and telecommunications equipment. These approvals allow SpaceX’s local Starlink business to begin preparing for commercial operations, although the company has not announced when customers will be able to subscribe.
The approval is significant because reliable broadband remains difficult to deliver in some mountainous, rural, and island communities where laying fiber-optic infrastructure can be expensive or technically challenging.
What Vietnam Approved
The newly issued licenses give Starlink permission to provide multiple telecommunications services within Vietnam. Authorities approved:
- Fixed satellite internet services for homes and businesses.
- Mobile satellite internet connectivity.
- Use of assigned radio frequencies.
- Deployment and operation of telecommunications equipment required for the satellite network.
These permissions complete an important regulatory milestone, but commercial service will still depend on network deployment, equipment distribution, and operational readiness.
Launch Date Has Yet to Be Confirmed
Although the regulatory process has moved forward, neither Vietnam’s government nor SpaceX has announced an official launch date.
The company has not released details about pricing, service plans, hardware availability, or the first regions expected to receive coverage. Similar launches in other countries have typically included testing and phased rollouts before nationwide availability.
How Starlink Could Benefit Vietnam
Starlink uses thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites to provide broadband internet instead of relying entirely on traditional cable or mobile tower infrastructure. This approach can help deliver faster internet to locations where conventional networks are limited.
Improved connectivity could support schools, healthcare providers, agricultural businesses, tourism operators, emergency services, and small enterprises in areas that currently have fewer broadband options.
Satellite broadband is increasingly being adopted alongside existing telecommunications networks rather than replacing them, giving governments another option for improving nationwide internet coverage.
Approval Comes During Vietnam–U.S. Economic Discussions
The announcement arrives as Vietnam and the United States continue discussions on trade and economic cooperation.
The two countries recently completed another round of trade negotiations following U.S. tariffs introduced on certain Vietnamese exports during 2025. No final agreement has been announced, but technology investment remains an important area of cooperation between the two governments.
Vietnamese media have likewise reported that the approval comes ahead of a possible visit by Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, to the United States. Officials have not formally confirmed that trip.
A Process That Began in 2025
Vietnam first indicated in 2025 that it would allow Starlink to operate under a trial framework while regulators reviewed licensing requirements and technical standards.
The latest approvals represent the next stage of that process, moving the company closer to full commercial operations. Customers will now be watching for announcements on service availability, equipment sales, and subscription pricing.
