A man has died following a serious multi-vehicle crash near the Victoria–New South Wales border, shutting down a major regional highway near Mildura and causing significant traffic disruption across the area.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Dansons Road and the Sturt Highway at Trentham Cliffs shortly after 8:20am on Wednesday following reports of a collision involving a van, another vehicle and a B-double truck. The crash site is located around 10 kilometres from Mildura, a key regional centre on the NSW-Victoria border.
According to NSW Police, initial investigations indicate a van rear-ended another vehicle travelling along the Sturt Highway. The impact forced the vehicle into the path of a B-double truck travelling in the opposite direction, leading to the fatal collision.
Paramedics from Ambulance Victoria treated a man believed to be in his 40s at the scene, but he died before he could be transported to hospital.
Police confirmed another driver was taken to Mildura Base Public Hospital for mandatory testing. No additional injuries were reported.
Second major incident on Sturt Highway
The fatal crash occurred only hours after another serious incident nearby. Earlier on Wednesday morning, around 5:30am, emergency crews responded to a truck rollover at Trentham Cliffs just a few kilometres from the later collision scene.
Police said the 22-year-old truck driver involved in the rollover escaped without injuries. However, recovery operations to remove the heavy vehicle remained ongoing throughout the day.
Authorities confirmed the Sturt Highway was closed in both directions between Buronga and Euston following the incidents. Police warned the closure would remain in place for a considerable amount of time as investigators examined the scene and recovery crews worked to clear damaged vehicles.
Motorists travelling through the region were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
The Sturt Highway is one of Australia’s key freight corridors linking New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The route carries a high volume of heavy vehicle traffic daily, particularly B-double trucks transporting agricultural and commercial freight between regional centres.
