A teenager has died after being found with critical injuries at the base of steep rocks near Jerrabomberra Waterhole, a bush swimming spot on the NSW–ACT border popular with locals on warm days.

Emergency crews were called to Waterfall Drive on Monday afternoon after reports that a young person was seriously hurt in the gorge. A bystander attempted first aid before paramedics arrived, but the boy was unable to be saved.

What police have said

NSW Police attended and made initial checks into what happened. Officers said there is nothing to indicate further action is required at this stage, and the matter will be documented for the NSW coroner in line with standard processes for sudden deaths.

The teenager has not been publicly identified. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances, and locals are being urged to avoid speculation while the incident is formally recorded.

A spot locals know — and worry about

People living nearby say the waterhole draws visitors from Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounding suburbs, especially during summer. But the same cliff edges and uneven rock shelves that make the place dramatic can also make it unpredictable — particularly when surfaces are wet, footing is loose, or people move too close to drop-offs.

After Monday’s tragedy, residents have again raised concerns about risky behaviour around the rocks, and how quickly a day out can turn dangerous in bushland terrain where help can take time to reach the bottom of a gorge.

If you’re heading to a waterhole this summer

  • Stick to stable paths and avoid cliff edges, even for photos.
  • Don’t jump from rocks unless the area is clearly designated as safe.
  • Go with others, and tell someone where you’re heading.
  • If an emergency happens, call 000 and follow operator instructions.
