Telegram is available again on Apple’s App Store after a short worldwide removal in early August 2026 temporarily stopped iPhone and iPad users from downloading the messaging app. Apple has now confirmed that the listing was taken down after its review found prohibited child sexual abuse material linked to content posted by a Telegram user.
The app returned within hours after Telegram removed the material and banned the account responsible. People who already had Telegram installed were able to continue using the service during the removal, so the incident did not amount to a wider Telegram outage.
Apple confirms why Telegram disappeared
The disappearance initially created uncertainty because Telegram suddenly stopped appearing in App Store search results in several countries and its direct iOS download page became unavailable.
Apple later clarified that the temporary action was connected to enforcement of its App Store safety rules. The company said Telegram was restored after the developer dealt with the content that triggered the review.
This means the August incident was different from a technical App Store failure or a confirmed government-ordered ban. The problem affected Telegram’s availability for new iOS downloads rather than its underlying messaging network.
Pavel Durov says an attacker planted illegal content
Pavel Durov, the founder and chief executive of Telegram, later said the material had been deliberately planted in a public group by a person attempting to have communities or apps removed.
According to Durov’s account, the attacker edited an older message and inserted AI-modified illegal material in a way that made it harder for ordinary group members to notice and report quickly.
He described the tactic as “takedown extortion,” in which attackers allegedly place prohibited material inside online communities and then threaten administrators or exploit platform-reporting systems to trigger enforcement action.
Apple has confirmed the prohibited-content issue that led to Telegram’s removal, but Durov’s wider claims about the attacker’s motive and method come from Telegram and have not been independently established by Apple.
What the removal meant for iPhone users
The main impact was on people trying to install Telegram for the first time or download it again after previously deleting the app.
Existing installations continued working, including access to chats, groups, channels and calls. Users were not automatically signed out simply because the App Store listing had disappeared.
That distinction is useful when assessing similar incidents. An App Store delisting can prevent installations without interrupting an app’s servers, while a service outage can leave an app installed but unable to connect.
